We hear this morning that President Bush is not going to propose any “quick fixes” to the problem of steadily increasing gas prices. He’s looking to long-term solutions from a sustainable national energy policy.
What? No quick fixes? What is Bush thinking? Doesn’t he know that the people of this country expect the Imperial Federal Government to step in with a solution – a quick fix – to each and every problem that rises up to smite us in our daily lives? That’s what government is for! To solve our problems! We’re supposed to be able to live our lives without ever having to address any severe problems without the help of our wonderful friends in government.
God forbid Americans should have to adjust their spending and driving to deal with high gasoline prices! Cut back on my cell phone usage to save money for gas? Are you nuts! Combine trips? Why should I be inconvenienced when government should be solving the problem?
Bush, of course, has it right. The federal government doesn’t exist to step in every time an inconvenience lands on America’s doorstep.
There is supposed to be some degree of self-sufficiency in the American spirit. Hopefully it isn’t completely dead.
