There isn't any other country in the world that punishes crime as harshly, excessively, and unfairly as the United States. Most jail sentences even for first time offenders are well over 10 years.

The US also has the world's largest prison population by a very wide margin.

Something is very wrong here..

Never been in the US. And NEVER want to go there. Too many guns, too many right-wing nuts clutching them.

For- profit prisons (For- profit jails did not work. Failed. Not enough profit.)
Highest yield of profits ? Prisons for teens and children. Smaller, weaker,
more docile. Un-informed, un-educated, un-able to think for themselves.

the problem as I see it is. Too harsh a sentence for non violent crimes and the violent criminal gets of easy. If we are going to have a death penalty, then use it. No more waiting on death row for years. After you have exhausted all your appeals you get 60 days to put your affairs in order, then you die. I would also make the execution public, so the criminal element knows you mean business. If death is not a deterant for a criminal then nothing is. He either fears the outcome and stops the criminal activity or he continues and eventually gets caught and put to death. Either way crime is reduced.
Drastic and cruel but sometimes necessary.

The first paragraph is ridiculous. When we start chopping off the hands of thieves or stoning women who commit adultery, then maybe you can say something.

There are probably more suspended sentences than anything else and ten years is only given for drug dealers (and this is excessive) or for the worst crimes against persons.

Astronomical sentences for non-violent drug offenses is becoming a real problem.

In fact, a large percentage of those incarcerated in the US are in jail for drug-related offenses. Some of whom are serving decades-long sentences for possessing peanut-sized quantities of narcotics.

For example, this 46-year old father of two who had no prior criminal record was given a staggering 25 years in the slammer (with no parole) for selling prescription pain pills to one of his friends.

The sham and corrupt "war on drugs" is a very big gear in a machine that keeps the prison industry as well as the illegal CIA/banking establishment narco-operations and criminal activities thriving.

I have to agree the sentences handed out to drug dealers are sometimes ridiculous. There are serial rapists who get less time in prison than small time drug dealers. I remember an 18 year old woman who got 25 years in prison for her part in a penny-ante sale of Oxycontin.

As long as the drug deal isn't related to gang activity or organized crime, these poor people do not deserve such extremely cruel punishments.

Some rapists and child molesters receive less jail time than these folks.

One of my 17th Century ancestors published a book in which he suggested that England's rogues and vagabonds should be shipped to the Americas because there they would have no one but themselves to prey on - and would be forced to become honest.

His idea didn't work.

But there were a few problems with his book. He was a highly educated Church of England minister in a wealthy rural parish where there were few (or NO) rogues and vagabonds; he had never been to the Americas nor has anyone established whether he had even spoken to someone who had been; and the first item of his list of 'essentials' was a Bible and book of Common Prayer.

He forget to suggest useful items such as a knife, an axe or a spade.

Presumably the 'rogues and vagabonds' would have to steal such essentials once they arrived.
