As a member of the military, i was wondering how the GLBT community feels about the end of the military's ban on openly gay service members

I'm former military (Army) and a bisexual man. I'm totally in support of the repeal, I don't think it will make much difference in terms of readiness and all that stuff. I know there were plenty of male and female soldiers everyone knew were gay or bi and it never seemed to make any difference. They just couldn't talk about it and constantly worried about someone using their sexual orientation against them for some petty issue.

I will say, I had the same attraction to men that I have now, except when I was serving on active duty, I didn't consider doing anything for a LONG time, because I was so worried about what it would do to my career. It wasn't until I gave up on a military career that I started messing around in uniform with members of the same sex.

I think there are some mixed reactions. We talked about it a while back in the News and Current Issues forum. Some feel the gesture is too little, too late. Some were disappointed that there were still cases of members being discharged even after the president announced his intent.

I personally think it's great, and a tribute to all those who never gave up, who kept pushing for the next step, even those who served in silence as living proof that sexual identity doesn't make a bit of difference between one soldier or the next. And of course to those who sacrificed their careers to the cause, or their sense of personal integrity, or for whatever reason, my hat goes off to you.

I'd love to have a copy of this letter.

I retired from the Navy and I have work with a few gay sailors onboard ship. I was once offer a BJ but turn it down. I was half way thru to my retire time. Anyway, as long they do their work and they were good at it their job. I didn't care if they were gay, they had a job to do. What they do when the go on liberty is their business but once on ship, it job performance. I didn't ask them about their gay life style cause it wasn't my need to know. That my 2 cents.

My knowledge of the military begins and ends with the ranks on Call of Duty.
