I must admit I'm puzzled and surprised at the lack of Liberal outrage at what's been going on in the news lately, but surprised in a very pleasant way. It actually makes me proud.
There's a lot to be outraged about. No one can any longer deny that Iraq's a complete and unmitigated disaster and has been from the start. The attorney general's office has been used for cheap and sleazy political vendetta; the Vice President's office has been used to spread rumors to discredit political opponents - both instances harking back to the very worst days of the Nixon era. The CIA, we just learned yesterday, was informed by French intelligence back in January of 2001 about Bin Ladin's plans to hijack American jetliners, yet chose to ignore these warnings because Bush had other priorities (Star Wars was the #1 Defense issue, remember?) The IPCC report on global warming places the reality of the phenomoenon beyond doubt and shows how the government lied and manipulated information to cover up the truth. And this latest tragedy in Virginia Tech once again has the entire world scratching its head in bewilderment at the United States' total lack of gun control laws.
There are plenty of knives to be twisted here, plenty of "I told you so's" waiting to be said, plenty of faces to be rubbed in it, but so far I see nothing but an admirably show of self-restraint and civility. You know that if the shoe were on the other foot - if George Bush got a blow job in the White House, say - the local conservatives would be jumping up and down and hooting and screaming, slapping their asses and throwing shit like no one's business.
Don't tell me the left is just more mature than that? Is that our problem?
