No Liberal Backlash?

I must admit I'm puzzled and surprised at the lack of Liberal outrage at what's been going on in the news lately, but surprised in a very pleasant way. It actually makes me proud.

There's a lot to be outraged about. No one can any longer deny that Iraq's a complete and unmitigated disaster and has been from the start. The attorney general's office has been used for cheap and sleazy political vendetta; the Vice President's office has been used to spread rumors to discredit political opponents - both instances harking back to the very worst days of the Nixon era. The CIA, we just learned yesterday, was informed by French intelligence back in January of 2001 about Bin Ladin's plans to hijack American jetliners, yet chose to ignore these warnings because Bush had other priorities (Star Wars was the #1 Defense issue, remember?) The IPCC report on global warming places the reality of the phenomoenon beyond doubt and shows how the government lied and manipulated information to cover up the truth. And this latest tragedy in Virginia Tech once again has the entire world scratching its head in bewilderment at the United States' total lack of gun control laws.

There are plenty of knives to be twisted here, plenty of "I told you so's" waiting to be said, plenty of faces to be rubbed in it, but so far I see nothing but an admirably show of self-restraint and civility. You know that if the shoe were on the other foot - if George Bush got a blow job in the White House, say - the local conservatives would be jumping up and down and hooting and screaming, slapping their asses and throwing shit like no one's business.

Don't tell me the left is just more mature than that? Is that our problem?

About "gun control", does anyone have a plan on how to get the guns out of the hands of criminals instead of us law abiding citizens? I'd be all for that kind of a plan.

I'd guess the gun control controversy will hit full swing next week.

Politicizing tragedies too soon creates too much public backlash.

Silly Dr.
You know Everyone wants to be an American! We're the best, defenders of Freedom, givers of goodness, the Saints of the Free world. No one thinks maliciously of us and our government knows what is best for all. Our leaders would never lie to us, they are here to protect our freedoms and the freedom of all the oppressed nations.

That's funny, isn't it? its like Sher took over my body for a moment.

Oh, but how can we gloat when these guys have been so clever! For eight years they've used their power to have a party on our credit card and trash the neat and tidy house that was built up over several presidents. They've trashed the justice system (to their benefit), the health care system (to their benefit), taxes (to their benefit), the enviornment (to their benefit), they've put the country deep in debt and there may be no way out...it goes on and on. And while whoever takes over is mired with so much to fix (health care, the treasury, foreign policy, war vets), they, like Halliburton, can move operations to another country and laugh.

They've ripped-off America for every cent they could get and they're away with their ill-gotten gains.

I don't know about you, but there's nothing to gloat about. It's like telling people that if you pick these guys, they'll trash our clean and tidy house. And when they pick those guys (yelling at you all the while that you don't care about the house!), and those guys trash the house worse than you could have ever imagined, all you can do is gaze around at the unending mess. You can't even manage "I told you so." All you can think about is the years of clean-up ahead of you all.

I don't know if that's maturity, but that's how I feel. You wonder if the house has been trashed so badly it won't ever be put back together again. Maybe that's why there's no gloating. There's just too much mess.

Gun control is more than good aim, Zeb. It also involves picking the correct targets to shoot at.

Most people with guns are only aware about which end of the weapon the bang comes out of.

I'm with 3113. We need our energy to pick up the mess. We've no time for gloating.

I personally wasn't gloating, it was a poor attempt at levity, I apologize.

But thinking that taking the guns away from law abiding citizens who "should" know how to use them and at what time they "should" be used will keep guns out of the hands of "nuts" and criminals is a fallacy believed by many understood by few.

And to put a divider between "law abiding citizens" and "criminals" as if they were different spieces, as if one couldn't become the other at the drop of a hat, is equally fallacious.

That's my reaction too.

I have no idea in the world of what to do now. I feel gutted. My children will never be made welcome in the rest of the world- "Americans!"

As one of the law abiding citizens I can guaranty you that I would never become the a "criminal" - (and let's not quibble about the crime - traffic violations don't count). So my owning a firearm and knowing when to use it could come in handy, when some "criminal" does use his firearm to rob, mug, attempt to kill someone.

And no they are not a different species and true a "citizen" could become a "criminal" taking away my right to own and bear firearms is not going to keep them form being used in crime.

Just think, if one student or professor had been armed and knew how and when to use his firearm there may have be a lot less people killed at Virginia Tech by the "nut".

Zeb, with all respect, you can make no such guarantee. In this country it's quite easy to be convicted of something you didn't do. So while you can argue semantics, in the justice system's eyes, you would be a criminal.

I know. I have.

Of course we believe you, Sherry. We all know how "dangerous" you are. ;)

I've seen too many a good guy do bad things to believe that, but hat's off to your faith, sir.

I know from bitter experience what I'm capable of. As I've posted before, the only thing that kept me from being a murderer was lack of skill.

Better for me not to have easy access to weapons.

Yes, that's it exactly. I am disgusted and saddened to feel shame for the actions of my country.

And I wonder just how all of this will read in the history books.

We still have nukes... and a president willing to use them.

The Empire of Cockroaches will care about humans about as much as we care about dinosaurs... "Wow! They was big! They went *RAWR*... let's make a movie and make a gajillion peanut shells out of it!"

ROFLMAO...

I suppose someone has to say it.

Apologies first. I am not an American. I am not an American basher.

The Right to bear arms.
Deaths in the USA caused by firearms run at about thirty thousand a year - about the same as the total deaths of US soldiers during the Korean war.

Of those 30000, around 12000 are murders, 17000 are suicides. The other 1000 or so are accidents.

The total deaths by firearms for a year in Australia, Canada and the UK combined comes to 350.

We do not have a 'right' to bear arms.

Good Doctor

Very true, but I was somewhat amused/shocked/disturbed by the reaction from the Religious Wrong. My neighborhood was literally crawling with Jehovah's Witnesses today, attempting to capitalize on the misery created by the VA-Tech tragedy. They came door to door, trying to 'save' people one can only guess.

Here I was, diligently trying to finish a story for Literotica, but was disturbed by a knock on the door from two JW's. I will admit that one was really hot, but the exchange was a total buzz kill and wrecked my writing momentum. Maybe a good future story though...hot JW girl gives in to Literotica author. I'll pound on her (back) door too?!

Just wondering, why did W. go to VA-Tech to honor the departed, yet he's never been to a single funeral for an Iraq war veteran. Go figure....

Tell them, "I'm Catholic... you're going to hell."

They hate that!

In unreported news, tens of millions of American gun owners had a totally ordinary day & killed nobody. Thousands, possibly hundreds of thousands, carried concealed weapons legally and peacefully.

Abusus non tollit usum.
