I saw this film recently. There a few threads on the GB, but I didn't see any here. Given that it's a rather thoughtful film, this might be another fruitful place to discuss it.

Frankly, I was stunned.

I'd read a lot of other people's opinions before I saw it, and I wish I hadn't.

This is a film that needs to be seen fresh, without prejudice.

Who here has seen it, and what did you think?

(Those who haven't: read no further, just go see it, and then post.)

I haven't seen it yet. It is one of two movies that I know of right now (the other is Cloverfield, yet to be released) that I don't want to see any spoilers of. I think I have already read too much on it. I'm avoiding all media on it until it comes out on video, or I get so lazy as to wait until it is on cable. Of course I could surprise us all and see it in theaters later this week, but we'll see what happens ;)

I saw it, and was quite disappointed. Very slow, which isn't always a bad thing, but I think it was this time. If they could edit out that sad-sack sheriff and focus on the story of the welder and the hit-man, it could have been good.

I will never forget the Coen brothers first film: "Blood Simple." There's no denying that it was a riveting flick but I'm one of those folks who is repelled by gore and I nearly had to undergo therapy after that one.

Hell, I'm still traumatized from watching the damn "Wizard of Oz" as a kid.

Thanks, really. I'll let you know.

The only other Coen brothers' film I've seen is Fargo. I thought it was one of the best films I'd ever see. So I saw this one just based on that, and that it was something new that they'd done.

At the end of it, I liked Fargo better.

But after a week or two, I think I like this one better.

It's a movie that haunts you, and makes you re-evaluate your view of the world.

Like Mutt said in another thread: this movie isn't about the plot -- it's about the title.

It wasn't your thing, and that's okay.

Plenty of movies for you with exploding helicopters and chase scenes.

See it in the theater.

It's the only way to avoid everyone else's opinion, plus it's in six-channel and you get to sit in a comfy chair, a rarity since the inquisition.

Fargo was utterly marvelous. Frances McDormand was stellar. As far as I'm concerned, that film will forever define the word "droll."

However, I'm too old to wake up in the middle of a film and discover that I'm in the midst of viewing another Blood Simple. I can't take that shit any more.

Yeah, well, it was what it was.

But I'm too old to try to sleep through a film that I think should be one thing only to wake up and discover I'm in the midst of something else.

You don't know what passed before your eyes, and I'm sorry for that.

Stay awake next time.

I'll take that as a friendly jibe, rather than the snide put-down that it sounds like.

For the record, I've seen EVERY Coen Brothers movie, most of them multiple times, and I've loved about 90% of them.......Carney

You may take it as a friendly snide put-down. I don't know which side you prefer to put that on, but we could flip a coin on it.

Your review was: "I saw it, and was quite disappointed. Very slow, which isn't always a bad thing, but I think it was this time. If they could edit out that sad-sack sheriff and focus on the story of the welder and the hit-man, it could have been good."

In other words, if they had cut out what makes the movie worthwhile, unique, and bitchen, and made it just like every other movie, it would have been great.

What you saw was the story of the welder and the hit-man.

And that "zoom" sound you heard at the end was the meaning of it all flying over your head.

It will be difficult to avoid information about it: for one thing, you're posting in this thread.

I just saw it for the second time. The first time I saw it, the audience got the humor during the film, and at the end, the reaction was stunned silence. The second time, the humorous bits seemed to blow by them, they were talking amongst themselves through much of it, and after the end, I heard someone say, "what a sucky ending." I smiled at that. Some perverse part of me loves when something profound is panned by morons.

My point, though, is that this might be past the time that the theater would be an enjoyable experience: might be better to wait for the DVD.
