No (Almost) Triple Crown Posts?

In searching the General Board I haven't noticed any posts regarding California Chrome and his not winning the Triple Crown. Not only that, but also no posts about the part-owner who went on a bit of a tirade over the unfairness of horses running in the Belmont but not the Derby or Preakness.

Whether it was a lack of class or just being a poor loser on his part is not the reason for this post however. Horse racing is an exciting sport drawing millions and making millions, maybe even billions. So why isn't it treated like say, the World Series, the Super Bowl, the NBA Final or even the Stanley Cup?

To me the order should be reversed. To make it a bigger spectacle that it now is I would have a 20 horse field, (like the Derby has now), for the Belmont. For the next outing I would subtract the 5 horses that finished last, making it a 15 horse field for the Preakness. Then eliminate the last 5 finishers from that race making the next race, (The Kentucky derby), a 10 horse, best-of -the-best race for the glory.

The Kentucky Derby, at least in my opinion, should be akin to the finals of those other sports mentioned. The super bowl of thoroughbred racing.
The beginning 20 horses would have to run, (unless eliminated), in all three races. If a horse had to be scratched for any reason, one of those previously eliminated would move back into contention.

What do those of you who follow horse racing think? It really does seem strange to have a possible triple crown horse compete against horses that did not run in the previous "big" races. Your thoughts and opinons please.

I'm an inveterate gambler, especially on horse racing, and I'm for leaving the Triple Crown as it is. Coburn acted like an idiot after his horse lost. Period.

It's a very tough assignment in the modern era to win the Triple Crown. California Chrome certainly did not run a poor race by any means. But one has to say there is too much 'gunning for it' going on from other owners and riders and it makes the whole thing a touch unsavory in my view. And you see this almost everywhere in modern horse racing - owners and trainers simply just don't care about the animals like they used to. It's all about the money and I've seen some shocking riding especially in the UK where they just about killed the horse to win a race or force another horse to lose.

I'll be frank, Hong Kong, Australia and South Africa are the only places left (leave out Mongolia because it is not yet in the big league!!) where the racing is true and the animals are protected. Okay, yeah also New Zealand and Dubai, but they're special categories really.

Horse racing is too independent of a sport for the media to dominate things and control it like they do everything else, and they will NEVER let it get good billing in the mainstream because of this fact. People often think horse racing is crooked, but it is FAR LESS CROOKED than most other sports.

I only enjoy it as a spectator sport these days and don't think I'll ever go back to serious work in the business, but it still affords me tremendous excitement. I love to watch a great horse win. And I don't mind a good horse running well and not necessarily winning. Not to mention some of the incredible riders and fantastic trainers still around. I have never had a single disappointing moment in horse racing. Fact. It's just a wonderful sport if you can really understand it and get 'into it.'

Perhaps the T crown should be a race within a race and only the horses that participated in all three races should be considered for the title. As for the words of the owner, I think he should have kept his hard words to himself – he definitely didn’t look good.

Only horses that participate in all three races can win the title, because you have to win all three to be a Triple Crown winner.

The Triple Crown is about a horse being named an Immortal. Being able to run and win at distance against all comers, fresh or otherwise - is the telling bit between a Good Horse and an Immortal Horse.

To limit the Belmont stakes to horses that ran the Derby and Preakness would cheapen the title.

Coburn is an idiot and I hope he never makes it back to big time racing.
