Yes, I know, this is the last place on the Intertubes I should expect to find any helpful insight on a Christian allegorical novel . . . bear with me.

Bunyan describes salvation as something you have to EARN.
But wasn't he a Puritan? A Calvinist? A believer in predestination? You're born damned or saved, there's nothing you can do to change it.
 
You might not have heard of this book -- but there was a time when every Protestant home in the English-speaking world was as likely to have a copy of it as a Bible.
