He woke, and realized he was in a hospital bed. No idea of the time, but it was dark outside. As his eyes adjusted to the dim lighting he remembered he had crashed. And thought knowing he crashed was a good thing, no significant brain damage apparently. The rear tire had slipped out on some oil, so far so good, the bike went down, he kicked it away and slid on this leathers toward the barriers, and then the damn bike hit him, and two more bikes hit him, pinning his right leg onto the barrier. A lot of pain, the medics loading him into a helicopter, and blank.
His right leg was clamped in some sort of apparatus. Big pins stuck through the skin, apparently holding the thigh and leg bones in place. Cal had seen others like this - it was a bad break, he would not racing again anytime soon.
Cal started to notice pain all over his leg. He pressed the button to call for a nurse.
