Hi All, I just put in my first submission. I have questions! :)

What is the correct amount of character development? It seems that the point of this site is more sex than story... or am I wrong about that?

I joined for the feedback aspect of this site, will I find helpful feedback here or am I dreaming?

Thanks!

~Jen

Short answer is
1. Enough to tell who's screwing whom.

2. You won't get much unless you beg.

The answer to that, and most newby questions, is, "Whatever your story needs to fit the story you want to tell."

There is no "one size fits all" answer because some stories need a lot of character development and others need a lot of plot, and some stories just need lots of sex.

Find an amount of character development you enjoy writing and that works for you. I think I do a lot of character development in my stories and I do quite well.

The comments I typically receive on my stories encourage me but don't help me to improve as a writer. Once your story is published, create a thread for it in the Story Feedback forum. Provide a link to your story. How much feedback you get there depends on who drops by and your category. If it is a category that I find appealing, I try to provide feedback. But not that many categories appeal to me.

The Soulful Bard/Sammael Bard has a "I'll be your critic" thread in the Story Feedback forum. If your story is in one of the categories he likes, post your story to that thread and when he has time, he'll give you a critique.

Write whatever is needed to tell your tale. In pr0n, about the only development required is penile. A story of quickies won't have much time for maturation. And any comments, good or bad, indicate that you have provoked certain readers sufficiently that they *must* spew. You have done your job. But don't let them get to you. They paid you nothing. You owe them nothing but your best efforts.

Yes and no. The top lists are filled with "more sex" stories, but "more story" stories also do well if they connect with the reader. Check out this one I just stumbled upon today. The sex is minimal, with no big long drawn out scene that the one-handed readers can masturbate to, and yet it's got a 4.57 score. (It's only 2 pages.)

There is no 'hard & fast' rule for this sort of thing.
Write what YOU consider a good story with a beginning, a middle, and an end; mix in a bit of well-thought sex and you're in.

Good Luck

Such a dick ... I don't know why, but I always find things like this funny.

Back when America was great the average person was reminded about four hundred thousand times how much they suck. Today the number is about ONCE tho almost everyone thinks, 'YOU SUCK.'

I'm doing my part to make America great again.

JBJ is the AH's pet troll. Please quit feeding him. He's a big enough ass now.

If your writing strikes a chord you'll get feedback. Some of it can be quite hateful, but it can be flattering or helpful as well. Unless you really roil people, you'll get very little of anything. Most readers are busy clicking though to find something to jack or jill to, and once they've gotten off they move on without leaving votes or comments. But a few rare souls will contact you, and that often makes the effort worthwhile. If you do decent plot and characters, there's more of a chance you'll get feedback, if only because plot slows the getting-off process.

Ratings (the clickable stars) get averaged. In general if you get an average of 4.5+ you're doing very well, but don't take the average too seriously. They are very random.

Write whatever feels right to you. As soon as you try to please the crowd, you end up with something that reads dishonest. I prefer story over sex, but others have the exact opposite opinion.

The anonymous nature of this site leads to some brutal feedback sometimes, but you can filter the useless ones. Lit is a crash course in writing. It will toughen you up quickly.

Like everything else, the amount of character development is proportional to the length of the story.

For a short story, there's either none needed or it happens very quickly. For a long story or extended series, it tends to happen over time because it's boring for both reader and writer if stuff doesn't change.

Given that we are talking about porn here, you have the added factor that (in general) most of the story that's there is only in service to setting up the sex scenes. But again, there's a full range. If you start with a virginal prude and finish with a nymphomaniac bisexual submissive, there's a lot of character development in there. If you have a girl that starts as a slave and finishes as a slave, then not so much.
