I'm VERY new to the site and trying to post the start of a story without success.

(Possibly driving the webmasters nuts)

I thought I submitted a story early last week, however it is still in a pending status with no views.

Wondering if that is normal 'wait time' for a story to post, or, if I did something wrong.

First tried to upload a .docx file, but it didn't look like it went through. Then just copied the text and resubmitted as a txt.

Any thoughts as to how I find out the status?

welcome to the AH!

Give it another day or two. Its taking 6/7 days for long time authors to get their stories approved and sometimes new authors first story can take longer.

Whatever you do, do not click "pending" it sends you to the back of the list again.

If nothing after a couple more days send a private message to laurel who runs the site.

If it's still listed as pending, then leave it alone and it will eventually get posted. While the site says 3 days, as of late it's been more like 5 days and sometimes a bit longer before they get posted. Laurel has mentioned before that there's been a spike in the number of stories posted so it's slowed her done a bit.

It's taking anywhere from 5-7 days for a story to move through the queue for established authors. First time authors seem to get a bit more scrutiny, which could add to your wait time.

Don't click the "pending" link. If you do that and then click the submit button afterwards, you go to the back of the queue and have to start over again.

Unless it's been longer than 7 days ( and you haven't done the pending thing above ) then there's no need to worry.

Also - if your story is rejected you will always get comment with a reason so you have a chance to fix it or explain yourself.

Welcome and good luck :)

The first story is always the hardest... on you. You submit your masterpiece, then check on status every couple hours, driving yourself into nervous wreckdom. You keep re-reading your deathless prose and your make some little fixes, then hit the PENDING link and re-submit... and go back to the end of the queue. Oh fuck.

A week or more later, after you've destroyed your health with too much liquor and coffee, you check the status again... and it's been rejected! And you're not even sure why. Whaddya mean, there's maybe underage sex in the story?!? Where? You comb the text, searching for an offending passage, tweaking your words a bit more, then re-submit.

A week or so later, you're mentally fried. You have not yet been accepted into the Pantheon of LIT authors. You doubt your worthiness as a human being. You consider going into exile in East Ruthenia, taking on a new identity. Hope is lost.

And then... ACCEPTED! Your story has been published! Now you truly BELONG on AH! The storm clouds blow away from your forehead. All is right in the world. Welcome to LIT.

Now, about your next story...

There should really be a sticky at the top...this must be the fifth or sixth question about this.

What did MathGirl always say in answer to these questions?

The one thing that makes me know that the forum has become more civilized in the last seven years is that this question from someone new here isn't insulted with the Math Girl retort.

Lord knows I got a lot of flack for calling people out about making two pages of jokes without anyone answering the damn question :p

It certainly could be a stickey, but who reads the stickies? I don't.

Thanks for your replies!
These forums are a little intimidating to me.
Didn't know what to expect so thanks!

It certainly could be a stickey, but who reads the stickies? I don't.

If it were written clearly as, 'advice for new posters' and covered the incomprehensible labyrinth of posting, strange 'reads', waiting times and delays between submitting text files or word documents, delays during contests etc. it would surely be an aid to new writers.

I'm game to write it, if someone would edit it for me and someone could tell me how to post a 'sticky'.

Forums? Obviously AH and SF but should EF be included.

We graybeards don't help newbies enough.

Keep quiet and don't press any buttons.

I'm confused

... Whatever you do, do not click "pending" it sends you to the back of the list again ...

Does clicking on "pending" by itself send the story to the back of the queue or are you safe until you click on "submit"?

It's the submit button that does the dirty deed, but tell authors not to click on the pending link is just as good. Some people just can't keep from clicking on a button at the bottom of the page to leave the page. Go figure.

Only Manu or Laurel can make a post a sticky(always on top).

"Mathgirl" predates me, was that an actual poster?

As for the sticky, what would it say? They are only good if something is a fixed answer. The posting times are getting slower and slower so it would be...

As long as you do not click pending it will post when we get to it?

I am pretty sure when it reached 8 and even 9 days we had an appearance from Laurel saying how she was getting back on top of things.

The slow down is not a result of a huge increase in stories, but more likely some increase in stories and a decrease in interest.
