I always figured life stopped when our hearts stop beating, and life starts when our hearts start beating.
The problem is that no once can truly define "when life begins" without running afoul of some interesting philosophical concepts. Such as this one:
Every cell in your body is "alive". Thus, does an appendectomy "kill" something? If not, then does a hysterectomy?
Or this one:
It could be said that an unfertilized egg is "alive" and, unless fertilized and then attaching to the uterine wall, is spontaneously "aborted" by the host mother each month. Would the law against self induced abortion cover this?
Which argument can then be extended to:
Then does life 'begin" only after fertilization? What about the fertilized egg that fails to attach? Would that be some sort of "self induced abortion" for which the mother is legally culpable?
it's a sticky subject which is hampered by limitations in language and medical/biological understanding. The emotional overtone doesn't help either.
