I have this wonderful old dictionary that was my grandfather’s. I keep it beside my computer for obvious reasons. I’ve had it for years and never noticed until a few days ago that it has a “New Words” section. This dictionary was copyrighted in 1945 and I have gotten such a big kick out of these “new” words that I thought I’d share. They should give you an insight as to what was going on in the US at the time and if you’re like me you’ll be surprised that some of the words are as old as they are.

i really hate it when the damn computer starts thinking for me...i had these words in two very neat colums and when i submitted the thread the little fuckin' gremlins that live in there decided they liked it better this way...sorry.

I actually do this all the time, look in the new words pages of old dictionaries. I thought I was a freak. Well, at least now I know I'm not the only freak!
 
nope, not freaky at all in my opinion...at least if enjoying new words is the only criteria...now some of that other stuff????

well i hadn't thought of that but you might just be onto something....
 
Oh come on... I'm only in my 20s and I knew what a zoot suit was. I remember that there was an old Tom and Jerry cartoon where Tom wanted to impress a girl cat and made one out of a hammock. It was one of the few where Tom talked. That was my favorite Tom and Jerry cartoon.

I tried to find a picture of him wearing it, but my search came to no avail.

personally.....(not that anyone give's a rat's lil hairy butt what i think).......i think it's cool you like your dictionary so well.......i have an unabridged from the 50's that's pretty cool.....:)

oh and just a thought .......but anyone who could come up with a giant pig-pecker-on-the-hoof AV could NEVER EVER be referred to as an "old fuck"!!!!!;) :D
 
well hi yourself there goddess and welcome to the board...and since youre opinion is so well though out and well stated i really do give a rat's lil harry butt about what you think...

words have always held a big attraction to me and i've spent hours reading the dictionary learning new ones...

and finally, you have excellent taste in av...enjoy your stay here...

but honestly, i think i may be on the verge of "wearing out my welcome" as i have "enjoyed" my stay just a lil too much.....and may now be considered "that annoying newbie" by a few.

whatever the case, love the postings, love the site, and still think the AV is cute as the dickens, not to mention very original

This is the best I've done, so far, but I'm still looking. The Episode lilminx is talking about is "The Zoot Cat" it aired in Dec of 44, and was one of the first "talkies" cartoons done with Tom and Jerry.
 
that's cool ldf...i do remember the cartoon...jim carrey (?) also wore a zoot suit, bright yellow i think, in Mask...it's funny how this thread evolved...out of all the words listed that zoot suit would be the one picked to talk about...
