Hey all, just joined a few weeks ago. I've been lurking here and there ever since, but can't seem to find the answer to a question that I have. I tried asking in the general board, and was forwarded here. So just let me know if this question isn't appropriate for this section :)

First, I'm a mobile user. I almost never use a PC these days. Reasons for that aside, this site isn't very mobile-friendly. As a result, some functions (such as "search") seem to not work very well. The pull-down closes as soon as I click the entry field. But my point is, it's been fairly inconvenient for now, and it's been a struggle to find certain info. Which leads me to here.

I found this site while looking for a place that I could hire an author to write a short story about my girlfriend and a fantasy her and I share. But from what I can tell, there's no section for commissioning a story. Closest I can find is "story ideas" and I doubt my idea is all that intriguing to find somebody to write it for free. It's just something specific to things her and I have discussed.

So my question is: does this site allow me to hire an author to write a short story, and if not, then where might you suggest I look?

Thanks!

The site doesn't facilitate commissions but doesn't get in the way of them, either.

I'd suggest you provide more details here, and you might get some bites - story theme, expectations, etc. The other alternative is to find some authors whose style you like and approach them directly through PM or Feedback.

It's been done before and I don't think Laurel has all that many opinions on the matter: you could privately message any author and try hire them for the purpose without being all that open about it.

But I'd recommend trying to find an author whose work you actually like and contacting them personally. Most of the authors never visit the forums.

I think a lot of writers would be willing to write the story for free if given some details.

You might even get several different versions of the same story, as everyone has their own style.

You could pitch it as an open idea and let writers run with it.

If you don't wanna do that, find one author who's style you like and pitch them the idea.

Wow, lots of help within minutes :)

Thanks for the insight! I guess I can try seeking out an author whose writing I like, but I'd worry that they would consider the offer to be paid to write a bit out of the blue. Possibly even a scam. Maybe just ignore my inquiry altogether. Never know until I try, right?

And yeah, I could try and pitch it as an open idea (I'm guessing in "story ideas"?) but I've found similar posts with 0 replies. I've got nothing to lose in giving it a shot though. Maybe I'll include the option to be paid in the post?

Thanks for the help all :)

I can't speak for everyone, obviously. But I know if someone pitched me a story, I'd do it for free IF the idea interested me and I thought I could actually do it justice. I'm a very new writer so I'd consider it an exercise.

I think that's your best approach. Find an author you like, pitch them the idea. If they turn you down, find another.

If you're only looking for a short story, I'd think you could find someone willing.

OR, write your own version, then ask someone to punch it up for you.

I have done a few stories at the requests of other people.

The way to do this is for you to spend some time on this site reading stories and acquainting yourself with authors that you like. Then, approach them. Contact them directly, give them an idea and see if they want to write a story based on that idea.

You are much more likely to get a response this way than by making a general, public solicitation.

My options at the moment are pretty slim since I'm new, but I'll give a public post a shot anyway. Worst case, nobody's interested, I guess. Meanwhile, I'll try and acquaint myself with authors whose styles I like. Who knows, maybe it'll work out down the road.

First off, stay out of the GB (General Board) unless you have all your shots like you're going to visit a fourth world country. There are only a dozen people on there but they have a few thousand alts between them.

A few years ago there was no such thing as a mobile anything for this site. Now it is a work in progress. It takes time when you have one guy working with three semi trained squirrels.

There are some damned good writers here in the AH. Most have links in their signature lines to their works. Hang around here until you learn somethings about the site. There is a sticky thread at the top of this page that answers a lot of the newbie questions.

Lay out a short synopsis of what you want. You might get some interest here or at least more discussion on it..

Just be honest with any author you approach.

I've taken on writing a story for someone before under the premise of "Girl meets boy, girl falls for boy" only for him to keep asking for adjustments that turned it more into "Boy meets girl, boy stalks and assaults girl with a group of friends and gets away with it." One of these things I was okay with writing, one I was not at all okay with writing, especially because it was meant to be based on a real girl.

The changes were incremental, "She's sweet and flirty" slowly became "She's kind of an entitled slut" through a series of conversations and samples over a few weeks.

Please don't do that to a writer. Some will write nonconsent around real people, some will write it around fictional people, but many don't want anything to do with it. Let them know everything upfront even if you have some uncouth requests. Many people are very happy to write weird shit, so divulge everything so anyone willing to help doesn't feel like they wasted their time when things start changing.
Yeah I get it. I have an idea in mind as a starting point for a story, and aside from a few key things that are important to how it unfolds, I dont plan on interfering all that much. The only exception would be to adjust things that go off course. But I'm not anticipating that happening. Ideally I'd just give the bare bones idea and step back from there :)

I'm building a post for the "story ideas" section right now. It'll have much more detail than this does.

redria17 you haven't turned on your IM function. I tried to send you a Private Message. If any of us are going to be able to contact you direct rather than in the open Thread, you'll need to turn that on.

PM, not IM. It's under User CP at the top of every page.

iOS or Android?

If you're on Android, get the Android app. It's the easiest way to read stories, and it keeps your place when you stop reading part-way through a story.

Thanks for the heads up. Didn't realize there's a pm function here lol. Turned mine on as well

Ouch. Thanks for the heads up. I've just turned it on!

An app? Thanks. I'll check it out!

I hope I don't seem intrusive, but you owe it to yourself to first try writing it yourself. You seem articulate in your posts. As for writing your fantasy: it you can think it, you can write it.

I don't know what advice to give you beyond trying to describe it and seeing how that goes as a first draft. It's quite satisfying to see it published and know that you alone created it. You may become hooked like many of us have and then think of new things to write.

I appreciate the compliment (specifically that I seem articulate enough) but I easily lose track of some of the finer details when writing. Maybe this is common, maybe not. But I've tried writing stories before and they always leave me feeling like something major is missing. I really wish I could describe it. Perhaps I could send an example of what I mean.

Also, when writing out sex scenes in particular, I tend to think that they read fairly flat. If that makes sense. Boring, anticlimactic, etc. Maybe I'm being over-critical.

Helpful hint, I hope.

Don't forget the emotions and thoughts that go into the story, especially the sex. Think of it as the spice that brings out the flavor, so to speak.

I've been doing this for a while and I'm not bad. (Sorry but I had to toot my own horn). Check out my story list and see if there is something you like. I'm open for questions and such by PM, if you like.

I started out about as illiterate as they come. All it takes is a good imagination, an eye for details, and lots of practice.

If I may add something. The sex scene usually shouldn't be the whole story, although that is merely a rule of thumb and can be broken. The preliminaries and the "aftermath" can be important too. The setting is also something to think about and will give it plausibility. My own preference is often for New York and New Jersey between the 1960s and the 1990s, because I know how people thought and acted during that time.

The first time I tried writing fiction was screenplays starting in 2005. I couldn't keep the stories short enough or tight enough, but it was a good way to practice dialogue.

I’ve written stories for people who approached me directly and I’ve done them for people who went looking with a public ask on, say, Story Ideas.

What a lot of public appeals do wrong is to be too general - “l wanna story about my wife.” OK, gotcha, but here’s the thing. If it’s going to please you both, a story has to be tailored to both your interests, likes and dislikes. There’s no point in writing in, say, a romantic hot-air balloon ride if you’re afraid of heights, nor of having a loveable goofy dog as central to the story if she’s totally a cat person. You need to give potential writers some clues. (And once you’ve got somebody interested, be prepared to give a lot more detail.)

Keep in mind as well that most writers here have their own likes and dislikes and often stay within their own lanes. Without judging, I myself have zero interest in incest or cheating wives and cannot see myself writing stories involving such. So you’re more likely to get results by saying, for instance, that you want a writer to write a funny romantic yarn with you and your wife on a beach vacation.

I hope you find what you’re looking for.

Again this is where I'd suggest writing the story yourself, then asking another author to punch it up for you. That way it contains the elements you know you want and the other guy can just help spice it up a bit.

There are authors on here who write on commission. I can think of three or four. Most folks will write a story for free it is an interesting challenge or idea. For example, I am writing one right now for free because I like how the reader reached out to me and what the premise/kinks are.

A few above in this thread gave you the best advice, in my opinion. Take some time and read a few stories from the writers on here. Everybody has links to their work and everybody's style and approach is different.

Find a writer or two that you like and reach out to them. The worst that will happen is they will feel complimented but say no. The best that will happen is you will get your story. Or maybe two or three versions from a few different writers. That would be interesting. Two or three different takes on your story. I'd like to see that, actually.
