Finally getting settled in my new home in the suburbs. Had to get out of the condo in the city that my late wife and I had shared for many years. I have been trying to slowly retire for the last 2 years and the move out of the city will make my office more difficult to get to.
Found a great home in a really neat neighborhood .... young successful families .... families with their kids away at college, like my next door neighbors. Pool in my back yard for when my kids and grandkids come over during the warmer weather.
Have met a few neighbors .... couple of invites for dinner and cocktails. The friendly folks next door have invited me over for dinner this week. Their daughter, Brandi (I think), will be home from college for a few weeks. Not sure why I accepted their invitation (don't want to interfere with their daughter's coming home), but didn't want to hurt their feelings and say "no".
Winter break had finally come and I was really looking forward to going home for the holidays. It would be wonderful spending time with my family and hooking up with a lot of my friends that I hadn’t seen in awhile. It also would give me some much needed time to think over Chad’s marriage proposal. We had been seeing each other for the last year or so, but I had been a bit shocked with his proposal, being only 21, I hadn’t really considered marriage in the near future. As much as I cared about him, there seemed to be so much I had wanted to do before settling down, I really needed the time away from him to think.
I had left bright and early, just after the sun had come up and by the time I pulled up in the driveway, it was just starting to get dark. Stepping out of my little sports car, I took a deep breath of the crisp air, smiling at the sight of the lights twinkling around the house and pulled my jacket tight around me. It was great to be home!
I grabbed my bag from the back seat, leaving the packages still in the trunk to get later and rushed in the front door.
“Mom, Dad, I’m home, sorry I’m a bit late, but you wouldn’t believe the traffic…” I exclaimed when I came in pulling off my cap, freeing my long black hair from it, shaking my head a bit. I heard mom holler from the kitchen and when I unzipped my jacket, I finally looked up and noticed the strange man sitting on the couch.
“Hi, I’m Brandi, you must be the new neighbor I heard a bit about.” I replied, flashing him a smile while I finished taking off my jacket and dropped it on the chair next. “Damn, that was a chilly ride, specially with the heater out in my car,” I added moving to stand in front of the fireplace, rubbing my hands together and trying to warm up. With my back to him, slightly bent over, wearing tight jeans and a red well fitting sweater, I glanced over my shoulder at him, flashing him another smile. “So are you all settled in, getting to know the neighborhood yet and all?”
Quickly rising to my feet, "Hello, Brandi ..... yes, I'm the new guy in the neighborhood .... Alan. Your folks invited me over for dinner this evening ... I feel like I'm intruding on your homecoming, but your mother can be very persuasive, as I'm sure you already know. Anyhow, it is very nice to meet you .... more beautiful in person than your pictures."
(Damn, old man .... good thing you stood up when you did .... she may be your neighbor's daughter, and younger than your own kids, but those tight jeans and sweater sure got a "rise" which could have been most embarrassing, and probably not the kind of impression you want to make on someone you are just meeting!)
“Ahhhh, yes, mom can be quite persuasive when she wants to be,” I remarked laughing softly and turned around to face him. Eyeing him from head to toe, I smiled and held out my hand to shake his. “It’s nice to meet you too, Alan and you’re not intruding at all. Although mom never mentioned how attractive our dinner guest was.”
Attractive to say the least and from what I had heard, he was also living alone and unattached, , were the thoughts racing thru my head when we shook hands.
It was about that time my mom came in with warm greetings and hug, dad following with a bottle of chilled wine and some glasses. After several toasts to new neighbors and the holidays, we all sat down, me plopping down on the couch next to Alan, chatting and getting to know more about each other.
Seems like we took a little longer than necessary to shake hands, but Brandi didn't seem to be in a big hurry to let go of my hand either. Just then, the Scott's came into the room ..... Brandi's dad with a chilled bottle of wine and glasses.
After a couple of toasts, we sat to visit for a few minutes before going into the dining room. Was pleasantly surprised when Brandi "plopped" down on the couch next to me .... chatting back and forth, catching her mom and dad up on the last few days at school before the holiday break .... obviously a very happy and close family ....
Enjoying the interaction, feeling a part of the conversation, but not wanting to interfere too much as the family gets caught up with each other. Carefully, out of the corner of my eye, watching Brandi as she animatedly talks with her parents .... she really is an attractive young lady .... and the scent she is wearing, very soft and faint, is unbelievable .....
Dinner was great, I always looked forward to coming home and having a home cooked meal and mom was a great cook. We all sat chatting around the table after dinner and I kept glancing now and then over at Alan, who I got the impression was looking me over just as much as I was him. Each time our eyes met, I’d flash him a sexy smile, flirting with him a bit, leaning closer now and then when we spoke, brushing my hand against his when we shared a laugh. I knew I probably shouldn’t be flirting with him like this, but hell there was just something about him and the idea of catching the eye of an older man had always been a fantasy of mine.
By the time mom and I had finished cleaning up and joined Alan and dad in the den, I had been having such a great time, I had forgotten all about getting the packages still in my trunk. I slipped my jacket back on, zipping it up and then looked over at Alan.
“You look like a strong guy, how about giving me a hand getting the rest of my things from the car?” I asked him, although I was aware of the look I got from both my parents, asking our guest to give me a hand, but ignored the looks, continuing to smile in Alan’s direction.
Obviously, I noticed the looks from your parents too. "Hey, if all I have to do to 'pay' for my dinner is help carry in a few things from the car, I think that is a pretty good deal." Smiling toward your parents, I grab my jacket and follow you out the door toward your car.
Brandi and I exchanged quite a bit of eye contact during dinner, and a couple of times I felt her hand brush against mine .. at first I thought it to be accidental .... but after a couple of times, I realized that it was very intentional.
"Here, let me take those packages from you" ... as you lift a few items from the car and turn toward me ... for a moment our eyes meet again ... beginning to feel a bit of a "spark" there .... but quickly reminding myself that I am older than your parents.
But, on the other hand, it is obvious that Brandi is being more than just friendly with the "older guy" next door .... but, still I am going to be very careful here .... I know she will be home for at least a couple of weeks over the holidays .... I still don't know if she has a boyfriend yet ...
But, what the hell, let's take a chance here, "Uhhh, Brandi, you are probably about the same age as my daughter ..... you think you might be able to help me pick out something for her for Christmas .... I never know what she is going to like ... and, well you know how special a daughter is to her father, and I want to be able to find something special for her. So, maybe you could help me out .... I'd really appreciate any ideas you might have."
(We better get these packages into the house before your folks come looking for us .....)
When I handed him the packages, our eyes met and for just a brief moment I thought I sensed something in him similar to my own feelings. But just as soon as it was there, it was gone and he was the nice neighbor that had just moved in next door.
Hearing him mention about shopping for his daughter, I wasn’t sure if he was trying to point out the fact that he was older, or maybe I had misunderstood the look in his eyes. Either way he seemed really sincere about wanting my help and the idea of going out with him like that, even shopping sounded great, a good chance to get to know him.
“You’re right, we better get these things in, wouldn’t want my folks getting any wrong ideas,” I remarked with a wink, smiling at him and headed back towards the house. “And as far as helping you do some Christmas shopping, I’d love it. I have few things still left to get myself. I really don’t have any set plans while I’m home, so just let me know when you want to go, it’ll give me a chance to get to know the new neighbor living next door.”
So I was flirting with him, he didn’t seem to mind, and there was something about him that had obviously inspired me to do so. No harm in getting to know your neighbors or helping them out.
(Thinking to myself as we carry the packages into the house, "Hmmmm, she agreed to help with the shopping for Julie; hope she doesn't think I was just trying to be nice." She really did get my attention tonight .... but, damn, Alan, you are old enough to be her father!! But she did stir some "feelings" in me that I haven't felt for a long time.)
"Wouldn't want my folks getting any wrong ideas", Brandi said with a wink .... damn, wonder if she saw the smile on my face when she said that .... maybe she is just being friendly ... and a little flirty .... with the new guy next door, but I sure as hell am going to enjoy it.
As we get the packages back inside, I say goodnight to your folks, thanking your mom for the great meal ... and to you "Thanks for offering to help me finish the shopping for my daughter ... let me know when you want to go to the mall for a little while."
That ought to give your folks something to talk about .... and with a smile and a wink (which they can't see), I'm walking down the drive and back over to my own house ... with a hell of a spring in my step.
I caught the wink and smile you gave me after making the comment before you left and let out a soft giggle. When I turned back and heard my mom comment on how nice that was to offer helping you, I almost choked on another giggle. Luckily it went unnoticed, my father not once looking up at me from the magazine he had started looking at.
The rest of the evening I spent making a few phone calls, catching up with friends I hadn’t seen in awhile, but mostly I kept thinking about Alan. It was a bit late by the time I slipped beneath the sheets, exhausted from the trip, the evening, and happy to be home. When my cell phone rang, I just about jumped off the bed, swearing to myself, already knowing I had forgotten to call Chad.
After several apologies, we talked some about my trip and seeing mom and dad. He was rather disappointed I hadn’t talked to my parents about his proposal but did his best not to pressure me further, to which I was thankful. He was a great guy and would make someone very happy, but I really wasn’t sure that someone was me.
The next day I spent helping put up the rest of the Christmas decorations and watching the light dusting of snow fall outside. Luckily the forecast wasn’t calling for any blizzard or anything, with everyone trying to finish up their last minute shopping. Later that afternoon, mom had been baking batches of her Christmas cookies she handed out and I wasn’t surprised when she came out with a decorated box for me to take over to Alan’s house.
Quickly changing my clothes, putting on a snug fitting sweater and jeans, I threw my jacket on, grabbed the box for you, heading to your house. I laughed when I heard mom mention the shopping spree, wondering if it might have crossed her mind that there might be some other reason for the smile on my face.
After knocking on your door several times, feeling strangely excited just coming over, I held out the box when you opened the door.
“Well Alan, looks like mom likes you she put you on her Christmas cookie list,” I said cheerfully, then added, “they are great though, I’m sure you’ll like them."
After my wonderful dinner with the Scott's, including more than a little playful flirting with Brandi, I made my way home ...... relaxed with a brandy .... and went to bed with a smile on my face .... and slept thru the night ....
Still getting my home office organized, I kept busy most of the next day .... not even realizing how long it was taking, when I heard someone knocking at the door ...
Took me a few seconds to get there ... opening the door to find a smiling Brandi with a Christmas box in her hand ... cookies from her mother ... "Hello, Brandi, what a surprise ...."
"Come in for a minute ... I need an opinion on where to hang a couple of pictures in my office ..... and we need to talk about when we can finish up my Christmas shopping, that is if you are still available to help?"
Taking the box of cookies from you, leaving them on a table in the entry, I put my hand on your back and indicate with my other hand the direction to my office ..... "down the hall, last door on the right" ..... seem to notice a bit of a smile as you start walking toward my office ....
“Oh I’m available…” I said smiling with a slight grin on my face as you motioned me towards your office, the warmth of your hand on my back, hesitating before adding, “In fact I’m looking forward to our shopping trip, just say when.”
Walking in your office, looking around admiring how nice it is while I slip my jacket off. I turn around facing you smiling into your eyes, again feeling that spark of attraction as our eyes meet.
“Ya know, this town is pretty neat around Christmas time actually, much different then some places. All the shops downtown are lit up beautifully, they have carolers singing, they even have sleigh rides people can go on to look at lights, the shops, pretty much all over. Course, it can be a bit nippy, especially with it snowing out, but then that can be fun too.”
Giving you a wink as I move in your direction, then reach behind you, just barely brushing against your arm when I pick up the picture lying on your desk. Walking over to the far wall and holding it up, I turn my head towards you.
“So what do you think? Does this look good to you?”
"Oh I'm available" .... I think Brandi means a bit more that just helping with the rest of my shopping ... also throwing in the information about the sleigh rides, the nippy weather .... hmmm, I think I am going to pursue this a little ...
"That looks good right there .... let me get a nail to mark that spot so I can hang the picture later" .... trying to appear calm, your brush against me, however slight, was very "distracting".
"How about tomorrow afternoon for our shopping trip ... maybe the downtown shops would be a good idea. I'm sure you know a good place to grab a bite to eat after we are done shopping ... and a sleigh ride in the evening sounds like fun .... what would you suggest .... 3:00 tomorow? You're sure your folks don't mind if I schedule some of your time?"
“Tomorrow at 3:00 sounds great and don’t worry my folks won’t mind, specially since I’m helping a new neighbor out.” I said with a soft giggle, while I held the picture and you went to get some nails.
Very aware of you behind me marking the spot where the picture will go, I breath deeply enjoying the scent of your cologne. Letting go of the picture when you take it, I turn around and smile, sensing your slight distraction as we stand facing each other barely a whisper apart.
“So…I guess it’s a date then…” I pause briefly, that spark seeming more intense between us and although very tempted to just lean over and kiss you, I continue, “uhm guess I better be getting back to the house, wouldn’t want my folks getting any ideas ya know.”
The tension continues to grow between us, but seems like neither is quite ready to make the first move .... both of us continue to tease and flirt .... I felt like you were wanting a kiss when we were in the office .... but also still holding back a bit, not wanting to scare you off .....
"guess I better be getting back to the house, wouldn't want my folks getting ideas....." (damn, how much more of an opening do I need?) .... "Uh, yeah, guess you better" .....
Stepping back as you pick up your jacket and head down the hall toward the door ... "Thanks for the help with the pictures"
Taking your hand in mine as you reach to open the door, I bring your hand to my lips for a brief kiss, "See you tomorrow at 3:00; don't forget to think about where you like to grab a bite to eat before we take that sleigh ride."
A soft smile creases my lips when your lips kiss my hand.
“Can’t wait till tomorrow and if you need any more help hanging pictures…or anything else that may come to mind, don’t hesitate to give me a call.”
I slowly turn to leave, almost hoping you would think of something else you needed help with, but knowing I really needed to get back home. Halfway home, I glance back towards your house, and grin happily, seeing that you were still at the door continuing to watch me. A sexy little giggle escapes me, excited by the look I see in your eyes and I wave to you, then turn and dash off home.
The rest of the evening although I go out with my folks to visit some relatives, my mind is filled with thoughts of our ‘date’ for the next day. I think of several different places we may be able to shop for his daughter, depending on some of the things she likes, and recalling a quaint little pub in town that has great food, delightful atmosphere, I decide it would be the perfect place to for us to grab a bite to eat and chat a bit. By the time I hit the sack, I’m not even sure I can fall asleep, anxiously awaiting for tomorrow. It also dawns on me, I still have yet to mention the proposal to my parents, and worse, I haven’t even given it my answer much thought.
Uhhh, yes, I am watching you as you walk back toward your house, and I'm not embarrassed that you "caught" me. It is pretty obvious by now that this is not just an innocent flirtation while you are home for the holidays ... there seems to be a genuine spark bouncing back and forth between us.
As I kissed your hand, I felt your fingers tighten around my hand as I held your hand to my lips ... and felt a little pressure from your hand against my lips ... obviously, the kiss was welcomed.
I was tempted to think of a couple more projects for you to help me with, but decided that we had probably spent enough time together today, and it was best for you to be heading back home.
I spent the rest of the afternoon organizing my office, saving a couple of pictures for your help next time you are here. After a light dinner, a glass of wine, I went to bed early .... but not falling asleep right away .... my mind thinking about tomorrow ... I really do need to get some shopping done .... but focused more on being with you .... wondering where you will think of for dinner ... and the sleigh ride (haven't done that for years) ...
I looked at the clock, smiled and glanced one more time in the mirror to see if I looked okay. Wearing a denim skirt, black and red sweater, I put a comb thru my hair one more time, slipped on my coat and opened the door just as you were pulling in our driveway. At once I felt those tingles stir just at seeing you and couldn’t wait for our ‘date’ to start.
My folks had already left, doing some last minute shopping and errands, so locking the door behind me, I greeted you at your car, smiling.
“I like a guy that’s right on time, “ I remarked when I got in your car, brushing off a few snow flakes from my hair. “And I think with the way the snow is falling, might just be the perfect day for shopping and a sleigh ride later.”
While I give you some directions on where the shops are, especially some we may find your daughters gift in and tell you about Turner’s Pub as a place to eat later, my eyes continue to watch you, excited about the possibilities the day may hold.
I made it through the day .... woke up early (as I usually do), worked around the house most of the day .... last few things to get done here, although I will be spending Christmas day at my daughter's house with her family. Mostly just trying to keep myself busy until afternoon (not very successful though, my thoughts keep wandering to our date - you have already had an effect on me that I find very enjoyable).
Finding just the right combination of khaki slacks and sweater ... need to look just right for my "shopping date". Finally, just a few minutes before 3:00, I walk into the garage and start up the Corvette (I'm sure you are expecting an "old man's car" ... I have a Cadillac, too) ... backing out of my driveway, I pull immediately into the Scott's driveway just as you walk out the door.
Feeling a few "jitters", but those calm quickly as I see the smile on your face as you hurry over to the car .... reaching over to open your door as you slide in .... brushing a few snowflakes from your hair .....
Driving away, you start giving me the directions to the downtown shops ..... mentioning a pub where we will be able to eat ....
Reaching over, taking your hand in mine .... "You look really nice today, I have been looking forward to this afternoon and this evening - with you, and yes, I think the snow is going to make this a beautiful evening" .....
“You look very good yourself,” I say, giving your hand a squeeze, crossing my legs, my skirt riding up my thigh a bit. “Nice car too, by the way.”
We chat back and forth, smiles and looks passing between us. After finding a parking spot and getting out of the car, moving close to you and taking your arm, catching the scent of your cologne as I do.
“Do you have any ideas what you might like to get her? Jewelry is always nice, clothes, books, music?”
Driving down to the shopping area, I did notice your skirt ride up a bit .... as you turned to talk, you become more animated causing your skirt to ride up a little more .... I know you had to be aware of it, but didn't see any effort to pull it back down. As we find a place to park, hurrying around to open the door and offering my hand to help you out of the car .... one of the "fringe benefits" of a Corvette ..... trying to be a "gentleman", but still catching a glimpse of a very pretty pair of legs as you slide quickly out and take my arm as we walk toward the shops.
"I think jewelry would be nice ... my daughter is always so difficult to buy for .... maybe we can find a nice necklace and earring set that she would like. I'm sure if you like it, she will too. My son-in-law and the grandkids are no problem, but my daughter is always a challenge."
Feeling good walking down the street with a pretty young lady on my arm .... I'm sure most people can tell by the way we talk and look at each other that we are not father and daughter, but another "lucky old fart" who found himself a cute young thing to show off on his arm (and I am enjoying every minute of it.)
"Here we go ... let's try this jewelry store .... look around and tell me what you like .... " Holding the door for you, inhaling the soft scent of your perfume as you walk past me .... very nice .... I could get used to that ...... taking your hand as we walk thru the store .... following you from case to case as you look at the necklaces and earrings.
Holding your hand, we look at the beautiful jewelry until we come to a case with a petite little necklace with a small tear shape diamond and tiny earrings to match. It is delicate and extremely beautiful, both of us admire it as I pick it up looking closer at it.
“Ahhh, now I think any girl would love something like this, especially from her father,” I say softly, smiling at you.
Looking at you as I hold up the necklace, I catch a glimmer in your eyes and can’t help but wonder if it’s the necklace you’re smiling at or something else. I lean closer, brushing up against your chest, very aware of the warmth of your body against mine.
“Well, what do you think, is this something you had in mind?”
"I think that looks perfect," turning and asking the sales person to wrap it for me ..... (so you noticed the glimmer in my eyes, and yes it was for more than the necklace.) Signing the credit card receipt, sliding the package and receipt in my pocket, taking your hand again we walk out the door. As we start walking down the sidewalk, not talking a whole lot right now, feel like we are both settling in very comfortably with each other.
"What say, we head over toward that little place you were telling me about and have a glass of wine and a bite to eat ... I'm about ready for that sleigh ride?" You smile and nod slightly ... guess you were thinking the same thing?
As we get back to the car, instead of reaching immediately for the door, I wrap my arm around you, pulling you a little closer ... with my other hand, my finger tilts your head back slightly, and my lips meet yours in a very gentle kiss .....
