Make Night Owls and Crime Watch tax collectors.

In the paper today is a photo feature about this county's efforts to generate more tax revenue. And what my county has done is deputize people to roam neighborhoods in the middle of the night, writing tickets to those who violate county rules for watering and parking, etc.

They snoop late at night to avoid confrontations with citizens. The fines start at $130. The cops dont have time to patrol every neighborhood, citing every car parked on the street. So the night owls do it.

Well, that certainly seems like ingenuity. Those also seem like high fines for minor infractons. Anywhere I have been, the parking limitations were during the daytime, because that's when the heavy traffic and the demand for parking happens.

Out of curiosity, do the "deputies" get a cut of the fine income?

Most neighborhoods have no street parking rules. The cops dont enforce it because they'd do nothing but write tickets for street parking.

This county has a 30 MILLION Dollar budget hole to fill. Tampa has 100 MILLION Dollars to find. And St.Pete has something like 75 Million less than it needs.

My county pays 10 Million Dollars for a bus service that collects 1 Million from riders. Cut the free rides and save 9 Million. Tampa did a study and discovered they'd save money if they bought every rider a car and terminated the bus lines.

Government here has more goddamned assistant county administrators and assistant county superintendants than most Russian novels have princes & counts. Everyone is a wheel. Get rid of them.
