I would like to see a category where people write stories based on real life experiences. I find many stories here that are supposed to sound "realistic" sound "forced" and so UNrealistic that they aren't erotic to me at all. A story based on reality, even w. embellishments, are much more erotic than far out, impossible to happen, fantasy.
So far I have submitted 2 stories. The best one was rejected. Once I figure out why, I'll resubmit it. I mainly have written for my second wife, to entertain us during the periods when we are apart for weeks at a time. They all have some events on them based mostly on her experiences and then heavily embellished. A few are based on mine - a few on joint ones.
Of course there are those that are into pure fantasy. That isn't for me. I can't put myself into a purely unrealistic fantasy by an author and be "affected".

...d

Every story I've ever seen here that starts off by claiming it is a "true story" is obvious bollocks.

There's no way to know what's a total invention and what's the gospel truth (though I swear every word of my stories is based on reality). There's also a piece of advice floating around somewhere that says if you can't find something you want to read, just write it.

I agree with Starrkers and imagine that if a section were added for 'true-life' stories, there would be a glut of so-called factual tales posted that were no more than exercises in wish-fulfilment.

If the quality of the writing is high and the story itself compelling, then categorisation as fact or fiction is redundant. With the obvious exception of the sci-fi/fantasy genre, any decent story should feel 'true' or is at the very least believable.

Never one to miss the opportunity for a plug, my latest submission, Nuts to Newton is pure fiction, based on a 'what-if' question posed by a charming young lady in feedback for one of my earlier stories.

Like many of the authors here, I find inspiration in a wide range of places - my imagination, the imagination of others, real-life events, and news stories to name a few. I aim to produce stories that are well-written and believable (or allow the suspension of disbelief), and to achieve those ends I listen very carefully to all feedback that I receive - the positives and the negatives.

By far the most rewarding comments I have received are of the "It felt as if it was me doing that..." type - or in other words, where I am told that my fictional story has seemed very real to the reader.

Exactly.

All mine are complete fiction, but I've had more than a few comments on the "real story about real people" feel of them (except of course the Erotic Horror :)).

It comes down to the writing, not the scene.

I get quite a few e-mails taking off on a story of mine as if it was real life. (I write mostly first person, which invited that, I guess.) The most amusing thing is that I get more of this on the pure fantasy ones than on the ones that basically did happen to me.

I've gotten quite a bit of feedback from readers who believe every one of my stories are the absolute truth.

I do use some real scenes in my stories, but they are generally fiction.

It is a real backclick trigger for me to come upon the first sentences of a new story - "This is a true story. I never would have believed this could happen to me!"

Bleah.

(If I want that, I'll read Penthouse Letters.)

reality

There is something to be said for leaving it up to the reader. Imagination, possibilities, fact or fiction, I'd rather let you wonder.

Fact or fiction? I sure wish my stories were true, I'd be one happy tired camper.

Some of my stories do hold some truth or bits and pieces of real people and places. Bits and pieces of myself also. I have one lady friend that i use as my female character in a lot of my BDSM stories. I just change the name later.

As for true stories, my "Memories of" series are true but they are more vignettes than actual stories. I hope they are a little better than the average "Penthouse Letters" stories.

They are amazingly better, and you know it.

And Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy. Penthouse Letters are true? Sarahh, you can't believe it.

Nope. I don't believe the majority of those are even sent in by readers, actually.

No, I mean the quality of the story is generally poor if it begins with "This is a true story. I never would have believed this could happen to me!"

*shudder*

That's because stories that start that way don't have a good hook. Then, what follows is an equally boring recitation of some fantasy the author has had, which they think should be as arousing to the reader as it is to them. They generally include little to no dialogue, and the scant dialogue that may be included is stilted and *yawn* boring. Oh, and these stories seem to lean toward second person POV done very badly.

There. Have I summed it up? :D

I think instead of trying to tell a "true" story, a writer should try to make it real. There's a difference.

Well said!

:)

Oh, I think that a story in the Sci Fi/Fantasy category that uses the hook, "This is a true story and it happened to me," has interesting potential. :D

Maybe. But have you ever seen a story that started that way live up to the potential?

Hmm...sounds like a writing challenge. *grins*

Come to think of it I used the implication of that as twist in Hidden Place. Not a great story, though, but it was fun to write.

*GASP*

You mean all those sci-fi and non-human stories aren't real!!!!

Here I thought I was writing non-fiction.

Me too

One of my stories, all of which are complete fiction, was told from the viewpoint of a very old woman in relfection in a letter to her granddaughter. The old lady, who was dying of cancer, wanted to answer a question of her niece. The question was, "What was your first time like?" One of the commentors enjoyed the story and ended the comment with, "I hope the cancer don't get you before you get to write more stories like this one."

Hereis where to find that story: http://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=289803

Fabulous.

What writers often seem to miss is that on a fiction site, like lit, the personal report or 'this is a true story' is often an instant click back.

I don't know you and being true or not is irrelevant to me. Spin me a good story with lots of character and emotion (and unclothed body parts) and I'll love it. Who said Adam and Eve was a true story? It still gets a lot of reads and a green E though.
