Well the Dem's are getting off on the right foot..."A corruption free Congress" is their motto and yet Nancy Pelosi wants John Murtha to be the House Majority leader.

Does anyone remember Abscam? An article by John Fund will explain it all.

"Mr. Murtha, a pork-barreling opponent of most House ethics reforms, could become the second most visible symbol of the new Democratic rule. "We are supposed to change business as usual, not put the fox in charge of the henhouse," one Democratic member told me. "It's not just the Abscam scandal of the 1980s that he barely dodged, he's a disaster waiting to happen because of his current behavior."

Scary, the only thing I've ever heard about Murtha (before the war) was his links to corruption. He gets out front on attacking Bush, and is rewarded with a big fat job offer. Not exactly a shining way to prove your desire to fix the problems that the Republicans have caused by having power for the last 50 years....What, the Dems had power for most of that time and didn't eliminate corruption then??? Shocking!

Meet the new boss, Same as the old boss.....

Bummer that the republican party has no input on the choice of majority leader. Must suck to be them.

On the left there are probably a handful of "honest liberals" in Congress who care more about the disadvantaged per se than they care about the statist institutions intended to "help" them, meaning those who live off those institutions - public employee and teachers union members and bosses. Support for vouchers in inner city schools would be a litmus test here, although by itself that wouldn't confirm sincerity.

On the right there are probably a handful of "honest conservatives," either of the classical liberal or the Burkeian sort, who are willing to not sell out the principles that they sincerely believe will promote the general welfare. Ron Paul is the only one I can name offhand.

All the rest in both parties are cynical slime, pursuing their self interest above all else. Some are slimier than others, but they're all slime. "Put not your trust in princes, bureaucrats or generals, they will plead expedience while spilling your blood from a safe distance," Machiavelli said. They didn't have congressmen in his day, or you know they would have been on the list.

So it will always be - it's the nature of those attracted to this profession, and the 535 in D.C. are the elite of that profession. Idealistic hopes for "reform" are misguided. The only real solution is to give them less to do and to spend by limiting the size and scope of government. If you're not willing to do that, then you have no right to complain.

Besides, when in the world was a "corruption-free Congress" anybody's motto??
