I was wondering how everybody else feels about the change allowing public comments on stories.

I think it is a great deal, except for one thing. Previously, I checked the box that didn't allow anonymous comments. I feel that if somebody likes or doesn't like something, they should have the courage to stand by what they say.

With the new comment style, anonymous comments are allowed and we have no choice in the matter.

If there is a legitimate complaint about something I write, I would really like to discuss it with any detractor.

Anyway, how about you?

falcon,

What is the difference between "anon" and "Jerkoffboy69"? Neither one of them cares what you think if they are negative posting. Nor do you know who either one really is. Personally I don't see what your complaint is for.

I can understand if they are emailing you with hate letters. One might like to know how to kill the pest problem.

Public comment is just that, "A comment" nothing more to discuss. If they wanted to discuss something they would email feedback. Your options are to delete their coments or leave them posted.

Other than that shut off the option for PC. See you do have choices, no one is forcing you to use the public comment option.

Phildo,

P.S. Of course I don't use the option myself.

I love public comments. On my latest story I have 9 (new record for me) There are some to treasure (from respected litsters) some from fans (swells the head to call them that) and even some negative ones that offer opinion, but the one I like best with a rating of zero from Anonymous in USA is titled "It sucks" and the body of the message says "It suck".

I agree. Just think about what your votes would be like if everyone who voted had to sign their name to it.

Anonymous comments are always frustrating, but I think they're vital. We have two modes of receiving opinion now: e-mailed feedback for those who want to discuss things with you, or public comments, for people who want to do more than just drop a numerical vote but who don't want to get into a big defense of their opinion.

The way I look at it, the comments are not really intended for the author anyhow: they're intended for the public. They make it possible for a reader to do more than give the story a "Great" or a "Sucked". And for those who want a more detailed critique and discussion of their story, there's the Feedback board and Story Discusssion Circle board.

I do a lot of story reviewing, and I can say that it's really disheartening to have someone ask you for your "honest opinion", and then get all huffy and defensive--if not downright nasty--when you give it to them. Everyone says that they always give their name when they come down on a story, but I can say that, outside of a few friends, I get very little signed negative feedback. You don't like a story, you say so and move on. You don't want the author running after you and fighting with you about your opinion.

This is the voice of inexperience talking, but so far, I love the public comments. My second story only posted today, but on my first I received 11 comments, mostly anonymous. I thought that was a pretty good amount, and most all of them were positive.

The only negative I received was through the feedback, and it was anonymous. It was very frustrating to not be able to e-mail back and say, "I HAVE thought of that, and it's going to happen in chapter..." But I just had to tell myself that if the person gave a rat's ass what I had to say, they would have provided a way for me to do so.

Thinking to my own reading experience before I got the notion to do some writing of my own, I only remember a few times sending feedback to the author. I usually voted, and occasionally left a comment, but never an identity or e-mail address. So I've been there, and I don't fault people for not making themselves accessible through their comments on my stories.

Just my thoughts...

Thank you all for taking the time to tell me what you think. I guess it was just curious to me that with the old format, Lit. offered the option of declining anonymous comments and not with the new.

The only (bad) anonymous comment I've received so far said the story "stinks". Hey, the guy's entitled to the opinion. I would just like to find out why the Australian who wrote it thought so.
