Hi all! We here in the States were able to enjoy the bold films of Paul Verhoeven for a short time (FLESH & BLOOD, ROBOCOP, TOTAL RECALL, BASIC INSTINCT, etc), but now he is back overseas and making films in Dutch. This is a trailer for his new World War II-era film, ZWARTBOEK, which contains his usual heavy doseage of violence and nudity! :)

Is this one going to be out in the US as well? Because, how did you know about this new film? I had not even heard about it

What do you think about the Paul Verhoeven movies?

IMDb indicates the movie language to be Dutch/English/German, whatever that means. I would think that given the reputation of Verhoeven's Dutch movies (his American movies have, particularly recently, been rather less well received by critics--think Starship Troopers or, especially Showgirls) that this film might make the rounds of the art house circuit in the United States.

Here's a press release from 2005 about the movie. The movie was apparently largely shot in Den Haag.

I think it means all languages will be spoken in the film, but the film will not be in all English or all German besides the Dutch version. The movie is about the war and during the war lots of German and English was spoken here. I think for authenticity reasons that 'factor' will be used in the film as well. I may be wrong, but this does not 'sound' like a Verhoeven-thing that's going to be taken abroad unless for some reason it turns out to be very successful.

You are right, Verhoeven made some not so noticable films, especially outside "Holland". Still he's one of our most successful directors (now what does that say, ehm? :D)

Anyway... thanks for your comment and welcome to "Dutch Lit, the English Version" ..... ;)

I heard about from one of my usual movie sites, ain't-it-cool-news.com, where Verhoeven has many US fans, especially the guys. I imagine we will get a dubbed or subtitled version here, since his name does still carry some weight. I found it interesting that even in just the trailer for the film, there is nudity. That would never fly here in the States with movie trailers, they have to be made safe for all audiences, even with an R rated film.

Oh, and I love several of Paul's movies, often mainly for the film composers he has used, namely Jerry Goldsmith and Basil Poledouris, 2 of my favorite film composers. But Paul's movies have a real visceral impact and wit, esp ROBOCOP, TOTAL RECALL, BASIC INSTINCT and STARSHIP TROOPERS, which is a highly underrated satire.
