Nobody can make you squirm like Cronenberg!
Same sort of thing in his acting for Star Trek: Discovery. He brings something unbalanced to the table. I'm just on edge for no obvious reason.Cronenberg is well known for directing, but his role as the serial killer in Nightbreed is as disturbing as his work is.
What frustrates me is we have had endless Hellraiser sequels and Halloween is still being beaten like a dead horse 40 years later. Everything is a remake, reboot and yet Nightbreed which came out in 1990 was left wide open for a sequel and absolutely nothing.Same sort of thing in his acting for Star Trek: Discovery. There was a director's cut a few years back, which I really ought to see some time; I loved the book. What frustrates me is we have had endless Hellraiser sequels and Halloween is still being beaten like a dead horse 40 years later. Hellraiser has been shit since the second one, embarrassingly bad. There was a director's cut a few years back, which I really ought to see some time; I loved the book.
Sadly Barker's been in poor health for a long while, and he spreads himself pretty thin between a lot of different projects. (Be nice to see an update to Abarat one of these days; it'd be a bit rough for kids who started the series back in 2004 and are still waiting on books 4 and 5!)
I know he was pretty unhappy about some of the adaptations of his work where he didn't have control. My guess would be that there's a lot of "doesn't trust other people to do it right, doesn't have the energy to do it himself" going on there. Hellraiser is probably a "close your eyes and take the money" deal at this point.
The original novella ("Hellbound Heart") is a favourite of mine. I watched the first movie, thought it was okay but not great, never felt the urge to delve further. If that story teaches us anything it's that some boxes are better left unopened ;-)Hellraiser has been shit since the second one, embarrassingly bad.
I remember when part one came out, for its day it was brutal and disturbing, they turned it into a joke. I think of the more recent ones tried to delve into full blown BDSM. I mentioned it to my daughter who had already seen it because she'll watch anything, and she was like, "I'd pass unless you want to piss yourself off."
A derail into Clive Barker works for me. I found a set of The Books of Blood in a box just the other day - might re-read them; also, Weaveworld, which I remember I enjoyed but cannot recall a thing about it.(I realise this was a Cronenberg thread, apologies for the derail!)

I'm sure I'm in the minority in this, but my favorite Barker adaptation is Lord of Illusion. I loved the noir aspect to it and the opening with the 'failed' sword stunt is a great scene. The original novella ("Hellbound Heart") is a favourite of mine. I guess a franchise like that is the closest a writer gets to having a retirement plan. If somebody out there is enjoying it enough to make so many sequels and spin-offs and help him make a living, I'm happy for them, but he's written so much other stuff that deserves good adaptations. Which reminds me, is the new Candyman worth seeing?

Other than the first two, the only one I thought was decent was 4 or 5 where they do the history of a family plagued by the cenobites and the spaceship transforms into a giant box trapping them....until the next sequelI actually really liked the first four Hellraiser movies. After that, I thought they were worth watching but of a lesser caliber, until the one without Doug Bradley. At that point, I disowned them.
Might need to check that out, thanks!I'm sure I'm in the minority in this, but my favorite Barker adaptation is Lord of Illusion. I loved the noir aspect to it and the opening with the 'failed' sword stunt is a great scene.
Yes, I enjoyed Weaveworld but somehow never felt compelled to finish it. Not sure what happened there.A derail into Clive Barker works for me. For me, China Mieville has taken over that slot.
Minority maybe, but you are not alone. I loved that movie. "I was born to murder the world!" Especially amusing if you are a Seinfeld fan, too, given Daniel Von Bargen's role on that show.I'm sure I'm in the minority in this, but my favorite Barker adaptation is Lord of Illusion. I would have loved to have seen a spin off of the botched exorcism that plagued the detective.Minority maybe, but you are not alone. I loved that movie. "I was born to murder the world!" Especially amusing if you are a Seinfeld fan, too, given Daniel Von Bargen's role on that show.
