I've got 1 published story so far, my problem isn't with finding the right button. Here's what's going on currently.

I submitted two works a few hours apart, one got sent back because I accidentally included some info I wasn't supposed to and the other so far hasn't.

I resubmitted the one that was sent back after cutting out the part that shouldn't have been in there and expected it to be published today or tomorrow completely fine.

What I found when I got up is that for some unknown reason the 1st of the two (not the one that got sent back) is now saying that it's only been pending for 6 hours when it should be closer to 30, I never resubmitted it and it had an hour or so on it when I got checked it first. The 2nd has got "new" in orange below it and still has it despite apparently being new hours ago and also having been submitted yesterday.

The one that I resubmitted also has the start and end sections in italics for some reason now, I did the same thing having a section before and after which is from me directly in my published work but it never got changed to italics in that and hasn't in the published work that didn't get sent back.

I suspect that an editor automatically put the italics in which is why it says it's new but I have no idea why they did for one but not the other and why they bothered doing it at all.

What on earth is going on?

You can get speculation here, which will likely be all over the board and not that helpful because the issue seems convoluted. But you likely aren't going to get it straightened out without contacting the site editor, Laurel, directly via PM (Private Message, upper right column on this page), not e-mail, which she apparently doesn't open. That address name--Laurel.

Alright, thank you for the reply. I'll get right on it now.

Note also that new writers can expect to wait longer for clearance, as their content will be scrutinised a little more closely to make sure it complies with the Lit rules. And it will take even longer while competitions are running (you submitted in the middle of a comp, by the sounds of things).

Also, every time you hit the pending button to 'check progress', the story goes to the end of the queue.

I had a similar problem two weeks ago (and posted about it here, too! lol). At the time, I had two stories published and had submitted two more. So, basically in your same boat. Just FYI... Each of my stories has taken a week to post (being new and all).

I had the same issue where the time changed on my submission. I hadn't done any clicking or opening the story or editing, etc. I didn't get a clear answer and didn't think it was worth bothering Laurel about.

Maybe Laurel or whoever needed more time to ask a second opinion about the category (category crossing for a multi-part story) or maybe they were trying to space out new stories so that they weren't posting three dozen in the same category all on the same day.

It didn't really matter what happened. It boiled down to just being patient and waiting the week. ;)

Another wise author told me that you eventually(as you post more stories) get over the 'need' to check the progress of your story to see when it will post. ;) I think they nailed it on the head. ;)

Applicability varies. I still, after 11 years of posting stories, and submitting 986 of them in this account, watch closely until my submission has posted. And if it hasn't after five days, I ask about.

Just an update, the story with the sections in italics is now published except it includes the italics I assume because Laurel hadn't read my PM by then. So whoever checked it over edited my work for no apparent reason. It isn't a big change just a confusing one.

Still not sure what the issue was but Laurel is the only editor, so the "whoever checked it over" is Laurel.
