Hi everyone! I have been a LONG time reader of Lit, but just got around to posting my first two stories. They were posted this morning and I'm trying to get a handle on how you can tell how well they're doing. What are the average reads/ratings for stories? I'd like to have some idea as to whether they're being well received or not, but I'm not that familiar with the rating system.

Thanks in advance for the help!

wow ... where to start.

weird harold will probably have the stats to fingertip, but me ... nope.

i suppose the best gauge is the feedback - both public comment and private.

the story category is a big factor too. some categories are more popular than others; be wary that some can also be misleading; the Loving Wives trap for example.

a score of 4.5 with 10 votes will get you the red H, although the H isn't necessarily an indicator of how good/not-so-good the story is, it's more of a popularity gig - so i feel anyway.

on your member page yu can keep track of recent activity on your story. there will be a record there of if/when it's favourited/unfave'd; if you've been added/removed from a reader's fave authors list, etc.

i was told - a while ago - try not to get hung up on scores and all that. just enjoy what you do.

stick around, have fun. good luck. :)

You can track the number of views from the submission page.
Good luck! I probably have fewer views than anybody on AH.

The first three days the story is out it will be on the new story page so most of your views and votes will come from that. After that things will slow down until you get enough stories up to get a following.

Comments are your best indicator of how a story is doing for the most part.

...

Or until you get enough stories up to annoy people, especially those who read Loving Wives. Then anonymous posts abusive comments and you acquire low votes.

Hi, CC, and welcome to the Authors' Hangout. This is a nice place to hang out and show pictures of grandchildren and ask questions and argue politics and play games. :)

As has been said, the category of a story will dictate the number of reads it gets. Incest and Anal and First Time are probably the most read, judging from what I have posted. Non-erotic and Sci. Fi. and some others get very few reads or votes. :(

As GA said, some categories are misleading. Loving Wives usually means Cheating Wives, although it can also mean swingers. Oddly enough, it can also mean women making love with their husbands or SO. Non-human DOES NOT mean animals, such as girls and dogs. It means humans with mythical beasts, such as mermaids or werewolves or space aliens.

To get comments from authors on this forum, you should include a link to them in your signature line.

Like everybody said, feedback is your best indicator, and don't get too hung up on the numbers. The more stories you put out, the larger your reader base will get.

Easier said than done for someone who's just starting, though. So, if you can't resist, here's some stuff you can look at for comparison. The top two have the most data.

My latest track from Nov. for all 3 names

Final day of tracking for the 2010 Winter Holiday Contest

Final day of tracking for the 2010 Summer Lovin Contest

Final day of tracking for the 2010 Nude Day Contest

Final day of tracking for the 2010 Earth Day Contest

Final day of tracking for the 2009 Earth Day Contest

how the hell do you track those things?

My numbers come from my submission pages, of course.

The contest results come from toplists, and more recently, the numbers added to the story pages by Manu.

It takes fucking forever, but people seem to enjoy it, so I do it for the contests whenever I can.

ah, i et ya. i was wondering about the contest stats. doesn't that kinda put all the howls of 'fix' down? i had a personal interest because of The Nice Bloke in the summer livin' contest. *smug* :D

You haven't noticed the collar around your neck that keeps beeping? :D

you ... you can just shut it. :D ;)

The nice thing about those who want to see a "fix" is that they can find evidence for that "fix" in anything If you play with the numbers enough, excluding data, cross-referencing, and making up your own, you can come up with irrefutable proof that you got cheated :D

Darkniciad's tables notwithstanding, this article by owlwhisper is, I believe, the definitive work on votes, views, and categories: http://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=406995

Without doubt, a solid, informative resource -- highly recommended.

Things have changed a lot since then, though. We still haven't seen the full impact of scores being visible in numerous places on the site, let alone the addition of comments listings and such. Readers have a lot more to catch their eye than just titles, taglines, and Hs nowadays.

New, wildly popular authors in categories like Non-Human and Interracial are likely shifting the balance as well.

Cupcakes, you write good stuff. Need some copyediting, and some more character development, but the Italian teacher is good, and the laundromaty is very good. Keep writing.
