New Author, want story feedback

I'm looking for an editor, sort of. I'm actually usually quite good with grammar other than excess commas and run on sentences. (I'm working on that.)
I'm such a new author though, that I could really use someone to look at my stories and see if they see anything problematic, or ways to improve. I know I'd get feedback after posting on the site, but that's the big bad scary public internet.
I mostly seem to be writing longer stories with distinct characters, and always seem to write three at a time.

My current story is Life of John, about a man whose life has fallen in to a rut he considers perfect. He gets a house guest turned temporary roommate in the form of an attractive nomadic girl who tries to figure him out, and help him.

If I work up the courage (perhaps liquidly) before I get a proper editor I will probably just post the first couple of chapters publicly. I need the feedback to fix my nerves. If I do, I'll still want an editor for any later chapters; Edited work is always better work, in my experience.

I'm not an editor. In fact, I'm getting ready to start a search of my own. However, I could give it a read for you. A second pair of eyes can be pretty helpful.

Tristanr,

So, I checked. You haven't worked up the courage. ;)

I think you're setting the bar a little too high for yourself. A lot of utter schlock gets posted to Lit. Some of it's mine. Point is, it doesn't have to be gorgeous to be Lit-worthy.

Still, I'll have a look over one of your stories if you like. Shoot me a PM.

Also, it's best to include a word count on your post here when you're asking for help on the forum. That way people know what size project you're talking about.
