I understand exactly what you've experienced and let me tell you why. I just created this account three days ago after an absence of over two years. This is my very first post, nothing prior under this account, and I already have twenty one (that's TWENTY ONE) PMs in my inbox. From doing absolutely nothing. I wonder if I posted a personal to talk to someone about sex, would my inbox have absolutely exploded? I remember guys on Lit being aggressive in sending out unsolicited PMs when I was here last, but I didn't experience anything like this! Wanting attention is one thing, and maybe it's something that others desire, but at the OP noted, it's overwhelming.

And I suspect it happens more frequently than people imagine. It makes me think of a school of hungry sharks that smell blood. I know that I could have turned off my PMs, but that sort of defeats the purpose of interacting with people here. Yet leaving them on I get smothered with a deluge of messages, many barely a sentence in length, yet direct in the writer's interest and intent. I guess that I could put a rude message on my signature like "Motherfuckers need not apply", but one, I'm not convinced something like that would discourage people, and two, I really don't want to be rude like that to people.

Maybe I come across as whiny or insecure, and perhaps there is truth in that. I'm just relating my experience here. I'm not looking for approvals or brownie points. I may be in the minority, so be it. I'll sleep just fine tonight. My PMs are now turned off, as I don't see any purpose in receiving any more.
