I saw this today.
And I was telling Grace about an event that was relayed to me by my prof in grad school.
One day I was just sitting and shooting the bull with my Prof and he shared an amazing story.
My prof had an colleague that was maybe 10 to 15 years older than himself.
Seems this guy was a very young man in Germany and working towards his PhD in Chemistry. And he was Jewish. He was sitting for his oral exams and his prof failed him. He could take the oral exam again in a year. Which he decided to do.
Then all hell broke lose, Kristallnacht.
He still decided to stay and take his exam. A few weeks before his exam, they came for him and his family.
Another Prof in the department took a chance and hid him.
This guy actually lived underneath the floor of a house for well over a year.
I mean...between two stories. He existed for the most part in a space of 18".
After some time, he was smuggled out to another location. He was there for a few years before being moved to another, then another.
Finally the war was over. But the first person that helped him was caught doing the same for another and was killed.
After the war ended, this man went back to the same university....and with the same Prof...resat for his orals.
He passed.
Afterwards he said to his prof that he thought he had done much better the first time.
His prof responded, "I never pass anyone the first time."
I'm not trying to connect the two.
But somehow, every time I here about people who survived this horrible time....I think of this.
Anyways.
Just sayin. it really wasn't that long ago.
We can't let it happen again.....ever.
Take some time and explain this period in time with your children.
Just sayin.
