Anyone have any idea of HOW to transfer data from one comp to another using a LAN cable? XP to XP? Anyone? Anyone? :(

Yup, you need to go into My Network Places, then click on "Set up a home or small office network".

The wizard should take you through it from that point. You need to have names for each PC, and enter those when it prompts. It's all quite self-explanatory and straightforward.

Unless you have firewalls...

;)

What you got so far and what you need hon?

We did what you said Lou. Tried . . .what do we need Lisa?
We have 2 CD drives. 1 drive is RW the other is Play only. Can one do this with 56K? The computers are talking, but we can't figure out how th exchange the info from one to another. Our flash drives are low MB, is it easier to transfer though a flash drive?

ok someone privately told me about FILE SHARING? Dump allthere, as if a flash drive and transfer???? Something is happening, I dunno what.

(sorry for spell mistakes, new aerodynamic board, not used to key placement :) )

Start, control panel, network connections, my network places, view workgroup computers. Transfer the data in the shared folders from host to node or vice versa. Whatever else you are doing should then be possible.

Most important thing:

Go to "My Computer" Open your C: drive "Right Click" the folder you want to share and from the menu select "Sharing". Check on "Share this Folder" You can then change the "Share Name" and "Permissions". Default permissions should be fine for you.

Also: You will need to make sure each computer has an IP address. If you have them both on the internet this will aready be done by your router.

Network hijack

I have/had a wireless lan which was configured with a desktop and two laptops. (xp on all machines) One day it went down and the access point (no router) started flashing its data light by itself. I changed the channel but all I get when I fire up the network is outgoing packets and no incoming.

I've tried re-setting, I've bought a different access point, I've reconfigured the access point, the usb box, the pcmcia cards. I've re-set up the whole network no end of times. No Lan.

Heeeeeelp.

To network two computers with just a LAN cable requires a "Crossover Cable." Otherwise it requires a LAN HUB.

A "cross-over cable" is required because a regular LAN cable is designed to connect a computer to a HUB. (the connectors on a hub are wired differnetly than those on the computer.)
