Negative comments

I had an anonymous person rip one of my stories today. I just started to write and know my work needs some attention but this person blast the content of my work. If a certain subject matter offends people, why do the read it and then post negative comments about it? I do like to hear from other writers as to how I might approve my work. I am inspired by a lot of other writers here but because of one or two "anonymous" persons, I have stopped allowing critical responses. I mean it's all in good fun. Why do people take it so seriously? I think they should shop allowing anonymous people to send messages. The one I got today was rather vicious and condescending.

I agree

I agree with DarlingGuy2. This is a wonderful forum to express one's thoughts and creativity. People should be more tolerant. It is fine to critique but in a constructive way so as to be helpful rather than in a negative, judgmental manner. Don't give up, Darlingguy2.

I'd like to add my own thoughts here. I have dealt with negative comments a few times. I post in a category that is unfortunately known for them. :(

Keep in mind such comments should not get you down. Most people who post them aren't even brave enough to identify themselves. They're also often more into their own ideas than yours- selfish jerks. I know it's natural to get such a way with fantasy, but one should not try to force their idea of fantasy onto someone else. Especially not someone who has taken all the time and effort necessary to write their fantasies out and put them on the web for others to enjoy. They should instead enjoy the fantasies for what they're worth, and as others have said, be constructive if they must criticize. Also note how the trolls' numbers pale next to the numbers of total viewers. These people, I think, are jealous and spiteful, giving in to the stupid ideas they have about sexual fantasy. They also may be frustrated writers- I've known a few writers who are also trolls. We should let their problems stay theirs, not come to be ours. If necessary, we can respond to the comments (even if they're anonymous, there are threads on these boards for us to respond), and then delete them once they're no longer relevant. As if they ever were. :)

KillerMuffin wrote an excellent essay on this in the "How-To" Section of Lit ("Dealing With Negative Feedback"). Some cathartic films that have helped me deal with it include Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, The Girl Next Door, Boogie Nights, Mortal Kombat, Scent of a Woman, and Mallrats. I encourage every writer of erotica and especially fanfiction who has suffered from flamers to check these resources out.

If you need to turn off anonymous responses in order to feel comfortable and continue writing, by all means do so. If you are writing for the loving wives cat, or taboo, expect trolls who have nothing better to do with their life than blast those stories because they can't stand them. They just troll every new story arising in those cats, sending nasty feedback.

If someone is simply spitting venom about the type of story you have written, and it is in the correct cat, their opinion *really* doesn't mean anything. The story was not written for them, obviously, and they have sought it out of their own will. If it offends them, that's their own damn fault!

Ignore the emails, and delete the rotten PCs if you wish. I would suggest leaving up any PC that contains constructive feedback, even if it is a bit harsh. This way people won't be discouraged from commenting.

Don't let the green scum on the edge of the human gene pool get you down, keep writing and hone your craft.

Hellooooo people!

In the comments area, at the bottom of the comment, a few spaces down. There is a little blue phrase for you to use! "Delete this comment". Use it! This is the tenth thread started by noobs complaining about the same thing. Apparently nothing can be done about the bastard, (or bitch) as they've done the same thing time and time again. This has been harped on since I first got here and I really haven't seen any change in this attitude yet. I recieved a brutal comment once on my poetry. I right then and there deleted it! Problem solved! If you want that vote changed, write your congressman. he'll do as much as anyone else.

whomever this person is, they are seriously disturbed. It's best to ignore them!

negative comments

These are just nasty people who get off on being nasty to everyone else. Did you notice they never reveal who they are. That's becauce they don't have the guts to take a chance on anything in there lives. They always wait for someone else to try it first. If it's good they want all the cedit, but if it's bad they're the first ones to criticize.

Just remember this; sticks and stones baby, sticks and stones.

I've struggled with this as well. Do I "throw in the towel" because some intelligence-challenged idiot selects me for a 0 rating? Or do I embrace the positive comments and write for them?

I say we piss in their intelligence-lacking faces and delight in their grimaces of disgust.

Writing is my passion. I don't know about you, but Lit has become an outlet that I would be hard pressed to do without. I suspect I'm not the only one to have been 'bit' by the Lit bug.

FYI, I'd be happy to look over your next story before you post for the "heat" factor. PM me when appropriate, but not in the next week.

don't do that

I don't think pissing in their faces would work...

It seems to me they would probably enjoy this...

There's the solution! Write them a watersports story and they'll love you! ;)

I take negative comments as they are written. If they are written in a mean and condescending way, I ignore them. If they are meant constructively and worth listening to, I listen to them. If they are just ignorant, I post them in the anonymous thread in the author's hangout and let everybody flame on them. Negatives are part of the process of writing. You can't please everyone so don't expect to always get glowing and wonderful comments.

And don't let them stop you from writing. It's the only way to grow and get the experience necessary.

Several years ago I wrote a story for Lit (under a different nic) and actually received death threats. It was stupid. Just go on and forget about it. There are crazy people every where and Lit has its fair share.

Yes the first comment I got was the same. I agree comments should be named only, for the sake of the author and other readers.

Heheh... I quite agree.

My favourite Flamer e-mailed me the phrase "Die Fagot!" repeated about 69 times. I think it was the mis-spelling that tickled me most.

Laughing evilly at them tends to put off even the most brainless scum!

The "Anonymous" thread my comment was (to paraphrase) If the bozo has to be anonymous then he really didn't have a whole lot to say.

Were this an honest review, guy... he would have emailed, or at least posted his nic/name.

Forget it. We've all had it at one time or another.

Welcome to the wonderful world of anonymity. There are people who become utter asses when they don't think there will be any repurcussions in doing so. I would simply leave their comments up so the rest of the world can see what sort of twits can be spawned and are allowed to continue sucking oxygen - tacit proof that Darwin may well have erred.

It is my view that a simple negative comment from an anonymous person is not worth the bytes it consumes. If the author has taken the time to submit a piece which the reader has been able to enjoy, at least briefly, for free then the least the reader can do if they are so inclined is put their name to their comments and provide appropriate feedback.

NEW to myspace ~ I'll check out some stories

Ok so I'm new to this and I'm just trying to find you people's stories so I can see what I think about these stories that are getting negative comments.

Please contact me and I'll be happy to tell you what I think.

:) Mistress Donna

Welcome to the boards, Donna. Hope you enjoy it here. Be sure you turn on sigs to see the links some people have posted to their stories.
