I am looking for someone to help me with some stories I have wrote and would like to post on here. How do I go about picking a good editor, the list is so long.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The answer to your question is as diversified as the number of categories of stories there is on Lit.

For a quick walkthrough for finding an editor, here are a few steps you could follow. Keep in mind it doesn't mean this is the ONLY way to find an editor...simply that those are the ones that popped up at the top of my head when I read your post.

1- Do you prefer to work with a male or a female. Some people are more comfortable to work with their own gender, some prefer to work with the opposite.

2- Look for an editor who's listed your story category as their preference.

3- What kind of editing are you needing. Lots of editors state clearly what kind of editing they're willing to perform on any given stories. You should look for an editor who suits your needs.

4- Don't look further than 2 months down the list of editors as those who haven't updated their profiles for more than that are either so busy they don't take any new writers or they forgot they put their names on the editor's list and you might end up having to wait an eternity just to get an answer as to if they're willing to take on your stories.

5- What kind of relationship are you expecting with your editor? Do you want to be mollycuddled or do you expect your editor to be bluntly honest and not sugarcoat his/her opinion of your work.

There are plenty of other steps you could take but these ones should start you on the road to finding the perfect editor for you.

Good luck. :)

:D
This one made me laugh out loud. I wonder which category would you find yourself falling into, LadyCibelle? ;)

LadyCibelle's list is an excellent way to start off.

In addition, I would recommend that if you start sending out "cold call" emails to editors, that you include a synopsis of your story as well as what your expectations are (type of editing, turn around times, etc).

Also, don't get discouraged if you don't find the perfect editor for you right away. Sometimes it takes a few tries to find someone whose style compliments and/or challenges you.

Good luck,

Thanks

Thank you both for the suggestions. I will start to look through the list tonight and see who catches my eye..

Lol...to answer your question Rogue, even though it truly wasn't one, everybody knows that I fall into the "bluntly honest" if not bitchy category. :D With me, people know where they're standing and they don't have bad surprises. Yes, sure I admit I'm not the easiest person to work with but once the writer/editor relationship is well established and we both know what's expected of the other, lots of people would be surprised to know that my writers say that I'm quite easy to please.

Awww CC, you should know by now that you are already on my list...who cares about the classifications. In my book, you have top marks. :)

I think I'll classify myself as the "iron fist in a velvet glove" kind of editor ... but I'm sure that there may be some dissenting opinions.

That's what's so fun with opinions....there are so many that you can be whoever you please depending on the opinion that suit you. :nana:

Some strange replys there I thought myself.
Your first post contained the words "with some stories I have wrote and would.....etc"
I had to laugh at the responses who all failed to supply an edit of your post, which was grammatically incorrect.
The possesive form of the verb to write should have been "I have written"
But hey, thats just an Englishman being picky eh?
Dont take me too seriously though, if I can genuinely help I will

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah I could have been a bitch and edited his post for him, pointing all the little errors and nitpick to my heart content....BUT... would it have answered his question? I don't think so!!!

I don't know what's your problem Clive, or yeah I know what it is since all your post today here are whining about stories that aren't accepted and how unjust and unfair you think it is. What you don't seem to understand, and I ask the forgiveness of the ones who already know that part, is that Literotica is a FREE site and we're lucky to have it. Laurel and Manu (the owners of Lit) don't ask US a single cent for viewing, posting, trashing and trolling around here. They have a few simple rules, easy to understand when you take the time to read them, and they ask us to follow their guidelines.

Sure, just like everywhere else and in everything, there is place for improvement, but IMNSHO crying over the fact that your story(ies) have been rejected due to grammar, spelling, punctuation or whatever other errors, is time wasted on your part. Sure English and American spelling have difference but as I told you in another thread, I have plenty of English writers and their stories have never been rejected due to their English spelling. So, if your story(ies) have been rejected I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with your English spellings and expressions and more with things that are truly wrong in your story(ies)

*chuckling*
Glad I'm not the only one who thinks this way.

It would be conceted and arrogant of course to have another opinion on that!

I posted today simply because in conversation with 3 others, we found a common thread.
Of course it is just my opinion, its not yet a criminal offence in the UK.
But I'm sure someone will change all that.

It is neither conceited nor arrogant to have another opinion Clive.
And it's not a criminal offence to have an opinion :) I welcome opinion and I'm all for them.

My problem with your posts today is that they're all complaining of the same thing. It's a bit of an overkill don't you think? My husband is Brit, he's been posting stories here for a few years now and they've never been rejected because of his English spellings or expressions. If and when they are rejected it's because something else happened.

It might sound arrogant on my part and I'm not fishing for more work......BUT....have you tried sending your stories to an editor here? I can talk to you until I'm blue in the face about what could or is wrong with your story but only an editor who has your story under his/her nose would know the true why/how/when/where's of the reason why your stories are rejected.

Give it a try...maybe? :)

That's my Rogue! :cathappy:

Just my type... go figure ;)

I would be really afraid to guess what category of editor I fall under. ;)

You're a doll, but the anonymous feedback I got a few days ago said, "You suck, bitch." :D :D :D

(I really wanted to ask how they thought this was news to me, but bless them, they left no email :D )

Much too scared of you! You're one scary lady when people don't know you angel...but as soon as people do they realize that they couldn't have been further from the truth. It has all to do with perceptions and expectations I guess.

Many don't handle "blunt" very well, I'm afraid. Others appreciate it. ;)
