I would suggest that you find a story here on Lit that really gets you going and have him read it. He will either get the message that you are looking to explore something different than what the two of you have been doing, and hopefully will discuss it with you. If he is totally turned off by what he reads then at least you know that he isn't going to share those type of interests with you.

Another thing you could try is suggesting that the two of you watch a movie that has that kind of subject matter and let him see what it does to you.

I think communication is key. While I am kind of new to BDSM I feel that if I was in a relationship with someone I liked/loved I could feel ok about opening up to them and expressing my interests.
