Most lit stories are pretty good but so many stop short of describing the details. I mean, the sounds, smells, etc.

Details are good... but where is the point that you have to let the readers imagination take over... otherwise you end up with a cut and dried version that only fits the writers imagination...

Interesting poit...Please check out my first story...My feed back has been that they loved the details....

I'm working on another one, and I notice that my details of smells and "flavors" tends to be strong, but I'm wondering if it is silly....I'll have to wait til it gets posted...

I think i agree with both of you

to make a huge generalisation, men tend to need more details about how the charicters feel about things, and women need more physical details, in their stories.

I have read fantastic stories from both men and women this was just something i noticed in general.

Funnily enough, I have just given a story to a friend to read prior to posting.

I made the comment that I thought I may have been a little too detailed in parts. His response? "I can always pick the stories written by a woman, they have all this detail......women always notice the details far better than men!"

I asked him to explain......he drew may attention to the section I had written about the bed.

"It was a big bed and it had been sitting there, a silent invitation all the way through their evening together. Her jacket was tossed carelessly over its foot, spread pulled back to reveal a couple of pillows it appeared she had rested against sometime before his arrival."

As a man? I would have just made sure ...yes, there was a bed!

As for the rest of the story......suffice to say it pressed his buttons!
