This is the son who chooses a girl who looks like his mother.

At this point in the story, the son has already been sleeping with his mother. The mother is still keeping her husband satisfied and maintaining her house. The mother insists that the son have a relationship of his own. The son does have a girlfriend. The son invites his girlfriend for diner at his mother insistance. This is the mother's first look at the girlfriend.

The girlfriend knows that the son thinks she looks like his mother. The mother is shocked at how much the girlfriend looks like her, but is okay with it.

Now, do the son need to explain himself?

Well I'm kinda confused here, why on earth would you think he needs to explain himself?

I mean if his mom is already doing him she won't step him aside and ask why she looks like her, his dad would think he made a great choice because she is hot. Though I bet he would tease his wife later about how their son wants her and maybe try and do a little roleplay with her as their son.

On another note, I can see at this point after dinner say the husband gets a little drunk and asks his son if they could swap partners for a little while as a joke. End up with a little incest swinging. Or you can do the threesome instead.

How about a "back to the future" type of twist where the girl friend and mom are one in the same but at different ages? What about if as another related idea they were identical twins and one was put in suspended animation (thus didn't age) without her knowledge.

Interesting, but couldn't be mom from the past.

However, running with the concept, perhaps she is is his great granddaughter or farther from the future come back to the past to get to know her ancestors, but can't help but date him and ends up mothering her own grandfather or grandmother say.

I like that, but I'll have to go back and change that the girl lives with her mom and step dad, to just saying that she lives with her parents. She can find out later that she was adopted.

At this point, the threesome is over. The girl has not yet met the father.

The theme I'm working with is "Just between us"

What the mother and son do is just between them

What the mother, the son, and the girlfriend do is just between them

What the mother and girlfriend do is just between them

The mother came up with that theme

When the girlfriend gets with the father, the girlfriend will state that its just between her and the father

Now while we are discussing different ways to do the story, what about a little Bill and Ted type thing.

So the son is going to be the god of the future and she is sent back to make sure he does something right, and while she is back there are all sorts of adventures, always humorous and full of sex.
