After years of apartment dwelling, I am finally in a home with a fireplace and mantle again. I hung Christmas stockings today, but they're still empty, and I need ideas. I realized that I had a very odd childhood when it came to stocking stuffers, so I need "normal" suggestions. I used to get things like safety pins, floss, and batteries in my stocking, but I really don't think that'll tide over with the in-laws. What are some traditional favorites? Do I just fill them with sweets?

Well, I dunno if you'd really call my family "Traditional"...

but our stockings were mostly stuffed with sweets and fruit (oranges take up a lot of space and also make the stocking bulge nicely), also, just any little cheap doo-dads that you think the person might like or get a kick out of.

Little Gold Boxes of Godiva Chocolates.

CDs or Cassettes

Christmas Ornaments

Handcuffs...

You know, I have a present for lavender and Mr. Mishka but I haven't been able to find what I'm getting you. I wish you'd stop being so difficult. :)

I usually include a small (under $10) gift, a chocolate orange, a candy cane, a real orange, apple, and pear.

My most favoritest stocking stuffer.. is an orange :) No idea why.. but an orange in the toe of my stocking is like nothing else. It's been something I've gotten for as long as I can remember.

I put little fun things in my kid's stockings.. usually an ornament.. this year is "sports" ornaments. I found one for each kid (they even look like the kid the represent) playing their favorite sport.

Buttons and patches for the girls jean jackets.. hot wheels for the boys.. including the hubby's :D

dog biscuits in the dogs.. kitty treats in the cats.. Fixadent in my moms.. :D

Stockings are my favorite.. especially for the kids. I always have way more than what will fit in there.

I always include an orange..tradition. Little makeup things for my daughter, Hot Wheels cars for my little boys, little toys I get at the Dollar Store, a big, fat candy cane stick. Really, whatever little thing strikes me at the time.

I'm not difficult. I would adore getting staple gun staples and batting material. See? That wasn't so hard. :) (You're the one that's difficult. I have no earthly idea what to get you. And this reminds me - I need measurements of lavy's apartment for her present.)

Looks like I'm getting oranges. What do you guys mean by doo-dads and under $10 gifts? I'm completely disfunctional in this area. Small books? Playing cards?

harmonicas, coffee mugs, little action figures, christmas ornaments.... stuff that's basically useless, but is cool and fun to play with or admire for a little while

Well, I'm not getting you staple gun, staple gun staples, or batting material. I'd tell you what I really want but I think lavender's already getting it for me.

What measurements?

Mr. Mischka, Never, and parents. No kids. Cats are already taken care of.

ok.. Mr Mischka.. hobbies? does he collect anything? my husband and I collect coca cola stuff.. so i try to find something to get him.. (I usually end up with it, but hey.. that's ok too;)). Does he read magazines? get him a subscription and put a little note in his stocking saying what magazine you got him.

Never.. ummm little things you think she might like.. can be joke items from the "adult store". Does she collect anything? play games? she's new to the area.. how about a museum pass.. or a couple of tickets to the theater..(movie or play) a gift certificate from a store.. or restaurant.

The parents.. hmmm.. hard one.. keep in mind their interests.. gift certificates.. tickets.. magazine subscriptions.. coffee/tea mugs with flavored coffee or tea.

Hope this was of some help..

Purple Dildos?

You know.. this house is starting to look.. clean. :)

Oranges are great, there are also chocolate oranges, in case you want to give them something a bit sweeter. There are also CDs, Tapes, Ornaments, Books make killer stocking stuffers, jewlery, pretty boxes, Videos, DVDs, stamp sets, diaries, candy canes, etc. Also, if you have older people (adults) in your life, there are things that are handy. Swiss Army Knives, Reactivators (if they have cell phones), emergency escape hammers (can be found at hardware stores, for people who drive, their a great thing to have), body lotion, nail polish, porcaline figures. Tradition in our family is an orange, a sort of candy, a candy cane, a high tech gift (from Father), some sort of body lotion, or other personal care item (from mother), and a safety gift from both parents. It gives a nice mix, and it definately comes in handy.

Realizing how much I'm missing those stockings!

Ours always had oranges and tangerines plus various items such as: life savers; gum; pens; candy cane; nail clippers or file; change purse; postage stamps; phone cards; key chain; magnets. Then there would be one "major" gift such as a piece of jewelry or gift certificate.

usually something that will be fun for about 1 day then be boring ... silly stuff :)

i have to have a real orange though just something im use too

What's this orange fetish? Do people honestly think "citrus" when they think of Christmas?

Yea Neva I was thinking same thingie

:p

I always raid dollar stores for stuff. Candy Canes are a must at my house. Little cars for the 3 year old, along with crayons (god, what am I thinking...?), hat and mittens, batteries if one of thier presants needs em, toothbrush n new tube of fun charecter tooth paste, small activity or coloring books (the ones that are 5x7 in size), a cute little key chain with old keys attached, and some little santa themed goodies. This year, I found little bouncy balls that look like a big round santa. For the 5 year olds stocking, hair stuff, lip gloss, hat n mittens, toothbrush/paste, Fun Foam for the bathtub in purple, a little christmas calender for next year, with markers and stickers.

My grandmother always used to put an orange in the toe of the stocking too :) She also put in gold foil covered coins, pens, a little calendar, a new toothbrush (to combat the sweets), and some little dollar items.

I know with the kids' stockings, it's toothbrushes, a small reindeer, kinder eggs, pencils, socks, gloves, bubble bath, and stampers.

As mentioned before, dollar stores are the best place for stocking stuffers. They usually have a pretty good assortment of scented candles and cute little Christmas things.

In our family, the stockings hung are there for decoration only. All the actual gifts go under the tree.

We did hang stockings when I was a child for St. Nick's on Dec 5th. That is when we got the orange, apple, and candy plus a small gift.

Never, if it wasn't for Lavy I would've got you something for christmas but she banned me.

Oh and mish, go buy a heap of two dollar water pistols... always fun.

stocking stuffers

i used to get an orange or tangerines in mine with a bag of christmas rock candy and candy canes and some christmas cookies.

wiggles...how did you get my pic? LOL
that's ok, now Santa has proof of who has been naughty or nice.

Just a thought...

Since the stockings are raided before the other presents, it's the perfect place for a disposable camera to record the resto of the gifts.

This suggestion isn't just for adults, BTW. Kids a young as three or four can be pretty good photographers if you let them. It can also give you an idea of what interests them most about Xmas when you get their pictures developed.
