And before you ask someone to edit it, make sure you make it as good as you possibly can by yourself. Read it for consistency. Read it for logic. Read it for clarity. Check the spelling and grammar. Use Read Aloud to catch whatever typos are left.
If you ask someone to volunteer their time and energy, it's only polite to do as much of the work yourself as you possibly can. Basic proofreading might be tedious and time-consuming, but it's tedious and time-consuming for the editor too, and it's not even their story.
