I need music! Not just any music, music to run by. My running play list is getting stale and I’ve canvassed my friends so often for new music suggestions that I’m sure I will be added to their “block sender” list any day now.

So I thought I’d come pester all of you! (You lucky Litsters).

Actually, from what I’ve read, (ABBA lovers aside), everyone here seems quite musically savvy, so I thought I’d tap this resource.

There is no music store where I live; the only way I get new tunes is by downloading via iTunes. (I don’t pirate music because I just don’t). My internet speed is primitive – it takes about ten minutes to download one song. I’m looking for about ten new songs just to jazz up the routine a little. I’m not musically snobbish but I do have certain requirements for training music and they are:

- fast beat (I’m running about an 8 min/mile pace at the moment)
- nothing too sugary (no Miley Cyrus) and nothing too harsh (no death metal/hard rap)
- nothing so obscure I can’t get it on iTunes

That’s about it. And here’s a small sample of some of the tunes on my current list. As you can see, I don’t mind “oldies” but if you can suggest something I’ve never heard before, even better.

And BTW, my taste in running music is not my taste in listening music. When I run, I leave my brain at home.

Beautiful, Dirty, Rich Lady GaGa
Dancing with Myself Billy Idol
G.T.O Ronny and the Daytonas
Instigator Kaci Brown
Jump Around House of Pain
My Sharona The Knack
Shut Up and Drive Rihanna
So What! Pink
The Twist Chubby Checker
When I Grow Up Pussycat Dolls
Whatever You Like T.I.
Dirty Christina Aguilera
Family Affair Mary J Blige

Thanks!

Too many to list, sorry. If you ever want to send me a flash drive in the mail, though, we might be able to work something out.

I've found that "Don't Rain on My Parade" By Barbara Streisand is strangely great for running.

Here's four random ones that I pulled from my media player.

1) "Poker Face" by Lady Gaga.

2) "Universal Mind Control" by Common ft. Pharrell.

3) "I Wanna Be Your Man" by Endeverafter. (This is a rock song, but I don't think it's too heavy. It really gets me pumped, so I thought you could give it a try.)

4) "Ghost Town" by Shiny Toy Guns. (Another rock-ish/pop-ish song that gets me pumped.)

Just one or two? Plllllleeeeeeezzz?

Don't get me started on the mail here. The last letter I sent took eight months to get to it's destination. Sigh.

GROOVY! I have the first one but not the other three. I'm adding them to the wish list. Pumped is good. I'm not averse to rock tunes, it's just that pop songs usually have better beats for training. Mil gracias!

That's a nice pace you're keeping. You'd leave me way behind in just a couple of months (I do hope that you're also much younger than I am so I can excuse the differential :D ).

I generally do not listen to music when I run because I run outdoors unless the weather is really ugly. Since I run on roads, I prefer to keep my ears clear to hear any traffic coming up behind me or from the sides.

So, on the assumption that you will listen responsibly while you run, let me suggest that you consider listening to bluegrass music. It's almost always upbeat, with a quick beat. Be careful, though: you don't want to find yourself sprinting with another few miles yet to go. :D

No problemo. ;) And I figured you might have had the first one since you have "Beautiful, Dirty, Rich" already. I'm hoping you'll like the others.

Thanks! Well, if almost-forty is much younger than you, then I am. LOL. I must admit, however, that the pace slows significantly in relation to the heat, (which is stifling at the moment). There's almost no traffic here and the speed limit is 40/km; most people don't even do the speed limit.

I like bluegrass, good suggestion! Any particular tunes or bands you can think of offhand? About the only bluegrass I'm familiar with is the Blind Boys of Alabama.

Will.I.Am - It's A New Day
Flo Rida - Right Round
T.I. ft Rihanna - Live Your Life
Beyonce - Single Ladies
Nickelback - Gotta Be Somebody
Q-Tip - Move
Kings of Leon - Sex On Fire
Santogold - LES Artistes
M.I.A. - Paper Planes
T.I. ft Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Kanye West - Swagga Like Us
Little Big Town - Fine Line
Fall Out Boy - I Don't Care
MGMT - Electric Feel
State of Shock - Money Honey
Saving Abel - Addicted

Hopefully you can find a few in there you like. :)

Keroin,
Runner's World's website has several playlists designed for different types of runs.

I have an iPhone and downloaded a cardio workout application that plays random songs all designed for cardio BPMs. Some of the songs are so not me... "I'm A Barbie Girl" anyone"? But the tempo is right for a workout.

Just about anything from Asian Dub Foundation will have a beat count that will drive you.

I've been digging on the Aggrolites really heavily lately. they're a roots ska/reggae act, and they are solidly uptempo.

I'd suggest Clutch, but they're probably too heavy. "Pure Rock Fury" is a solid album though.

I also spin a lot of Fishbone when I'm biking. Hell, a lot of ska period, but most of it is probably too obscure.

WOW! I am overwhelmed. Thank you everyone!!! Keep 'em coming, I'm loving it.

Crates of mangoes for all my friends!

Anything by:

The Fleshtones
King Khan & BBQ (or any one of King Khan's other bands)
Mad Sin
Moterhead
Modrocket

I recommend some Jazz

Begin with Charles Mingus:

  • From Ah Um
Better Get Hit in Yo' Soul
    Boogie Stop Shuffle
  • From Thirteen Pictures: The Charles Mingus Anthology
    Haitian Fight Song

Personally most of AC/DC is what I listen to when I want to get pumping. Just get their "best of" CD.

I also dig Call of Ktulu/Master of Puppets off of Metallica's S&M CD. It's a great sixteen minute or so pair of songs that just build to a fantastic end.

Keroin~

These are a few of my favorite songs to run to. Of course, I throw in a little Jonas Brothers now and then - I started listening to them for my kids, but now I do like them. Anyway, these are go-to songs for me (I am slower than you, so I don't know about the pacing):

Cake - "The Distance"

Finger Eleven - "Paralyzer"

Fatboy Slim - "Weapon of Choice"

((I also really like Fatboy Slim - "Praise you," but for you it would probably be more like a warm-up/cool-down song))

Ohhh Weapon of Choice

To be honest, I don't listen to bluegrass much but I do know that many of the songs can be quite upbeat, though some are quieter. When I used to run indoors with an mp3 player, I'd load it up with symphonic music - Wagnerian overtures, some Beethoven, and some Mozart - intermingled with a range of other, more recent music. Some of Keith Urban's songs are plenty lively and the Rolling Stones will help keep a runner moving. Tommy, by The Who, is good for a long run because it's close to 90 minutes long.
