I've lived in this apartment for over 6 years (and others for an additional 12 years) and have never had neighbors as rude and inconsiderate as those who moved in downstairs about 5 months ago. They apparently think everyone should live around their schedule (they work swing shift with Fridays and Saturdays off).

They yell at people in the hot tub to be quiet, though it wasn't after hours and the people out there weren't being loud at all, only speaking in a normal voice, but because of the way our complex is designed the sound carries right into our apartments. When the people in the hot tub explained it wasn't past hours, the woman said (yelled out her kitchen window) that it wasn't the time, it was the volume of the sound. That same night at 2:30am they were downstairs hammering, which I admit affected only me, since our other neighbors couldn't hear them, and I was up and wasn't woken from sleep, so I didn't complain, but I don't see how these people can assume they can make the rules for everyone else and not follow them themselves.

They have a very loud stereo and insist on turn the bass up all the way, so that even when I CAN'T hear the music, I get all the booming and buzzing from their stereo since it can't handle that volume. My living room clock flew off the wall at 9:30 one morning because they had the stereo up so loud it was shaking my walls so badly. Yes, I called the office on that one and the maintenance man immediately responded and told them to turn it down.

It's happened quite a few times, they turn their stereo on loud early in the morning and wake me up. Normally, I listen to my cd's with headphones and I keep my tv down low just BECAUSE I'm so used to living in apartments and don't want to inflict annoyances on other residents.

Today I've had quite enough and I'm sick to death of living according to someone else's schedule and rules. They are now listening to Cajun dance music being blasted right back at them and have been for the last 2 hours or so. Unfortunately my cat is hiding under the bathroom sink.

Any ideas as to what I can do?

Contact the people with whom you rent from and have them take care of it.

It is what they are supposed to do.

I agree with lovetoread.
If things get out of hand, contact police-type-thingy to sort it out.

Oh noooooo...not Cajun dance music. That falls under the cruel & unusual punishment provision in the consitution. It may even constitute a war crime.

But I like your style. ;)

*GRINS* Well, I do have some funny musical tastes. Not funny so much as cd's that wouldn't make it on the Top 20 listings on most radio stations (Native American, Native Hawaiian, Cajun, Celtic, Pagan, Classical, plus the usual Classic Rock, 50's, Country, and yes even some John Tesh and Yanni :) )

Actually, I love Cajun music, it MAKES me dance and always puts me in a good mood.

Life is better now, I shot my neighbors. Just kidding. They turned their stereo off finally, so I did as well. My cat came out of hiding and is sleeping on her tray table next to me and I'm hoping the ringing in my ears will stop soon.

They won't do shit about that. I had the same problem at one time.

When I was married, my wife and I had these 2 guys living together across from us. Those guys would play their music and television so damn loud that we could never hear our television. And it seem like they were having parties every weekend. We notified the apartment security and complained to the management and NOTHING was ever done. So I made one final complaint to the manager. I told him, "Either do something about it or I'll get the police involved. If any of them are arrestted and can't pay the rent, you'll have to sleep on it." Little was done. So one evening, I heard the noise getting louder. I knew that those guys were scared as hell of the police. So I would get my police radio, turn it to a busy channel, and turn it up very loud for them to hear through their door. I would hear the music lower extremely and one of them would peep out to door only to find me there with my police radio. He had no idea that I was with the police department. So I told him, "See? I don't need 9-1-1. All I have to do is get one of my buddies here to arrest you 2 for disturbing the peace." His eyes lit up and I had only one or 2 problems with them later, which I simply disbatched a unit to investigate.

A word of advise........When other neighbors complain enough about the police showing up to a noisy neighbor's apartment, the noisy neighbor end up getting kicked out. And that's what happened to them. In addition, the apartment manager was eventually fired for not doing enough about it.

I'm just glad you didn't have to resort to the John Tesch stuff. That might have caused publicity and all sorts of unfortunate reprecussions.

One of my cd's has some Beau Jocque on it. I like David Doucet and Beausoleil a lot.

You could always resort to practicing a little tap on your kitchen floor at unorthodox hours. :D

Seriously, I ended up stomping up and down on my living room floor (their ceiling) one fine afternoon. I think they were shocked, or scared?

Well, thanks for reminding me. I'm breaking out the Zydeco to cheer myself up next time the radio plays something I don't care to hear.:D

This is usually a pretty quiet complex and I'm trying to be a good neighbor, but it gets hard when you run up against people like this.

some people just have no clue.
I live in a dorm for 5 years on the 3rd floor of 4. A lot of people didn't realize how loud it was when they walked across the floor or dropped a pen since no one lived above them.
It's a horrible situation to be in. I just suggest what has already when suggested---contact manager (each and every time) and I would call the police, especially late at night---there should be a noise orrdinance in your city/town.

bickering between us continued for a couple of months untill. one afternoon we heard shouting coming from their apartment followed an hour later by the site of their hi-fi being launched from the top floor window by a pissed off wife/girlfriend??

hahahahahahahahhahahahahahahaha and there was much rejoicing

hehe There used to be two guys living downstairs (or one guy who always had a friend over), and the poor things never did learn to cook. I'd start smelling smoke, hear their alarm going off, then hear them run fling all the doors and windows. The entire time they lived here I was afraid the whole complex would go up in smoke.

Start a petition and have all the neighbors sign it.
Start banging on the wall.
Throw a party for the entire building, and don't invite them.
Flatten their tires.
Break their windows.
Spray paint their front door.
Get their phone number and scribble it in every public bathroom you can find.
Put big signs in the laundry room that you HATE obnoxious losers.
Write them a letter and SPELL out your complaints, and what will happen if THEY don't shape up.

I could probably think up more if I were in your situation.

**WARNING some of the above suggestions are illegal and were put in for sarcastic value. Choose wisely**

I once had the same problem with mariachi music being played late at night. So one Sunday morning, I turned my radio on, which was right next to their bedroom, as loud as it would go, tuned to a station playing gospel music. I left for two hours and then came back and turned my radio off. Never had another problem with them.

Well, I like THIS one! Oh, you meant as a solution to my neighbor problem :D

Allison484, that reminds me of a roommate I had in college. She always had to get up a couple of hours earlier than I did, and whenever she left the room to go take her shower she'd leave the overhead light on. That's one of my pet peeves since that's how my dad woke me up everyday while I was growing up to get ready for school by ripping open my Venetian blinds and flipping on my light. It was driving me crazy, so one day when I had to get up earlier than her for something or other, I returned the favor, flipped on the overhead and went and took my shower. The light was off when I got back, but she never left it on again while she was gone.
