I'm struggling to come up with a proper word for something in my WIP. The MMC is a cookie baker has one of those little shops at a mall. There's no store for customers to go into, just a counter for them to get served at, with a work area behind the counter.

There's a pretzel place in the local mall that is what I'm basing the physical space on, so I know exactly what I want it to look like, but I don;t know the word for those.
I think they're fairly typical in malls.

I asked the family here. My son is super annoyed because he does not have a word for it, even though he knows exactly what I'm talking about.

I don't like calling it a shop, but that's the best word I have so far.
The thesaurus I use has been no help. I don't like calling a store because you can't go into it. It's more than a counter.
It's not a kiosk or a stall or a stand.

What the hell is it?

Why do you say that it’s not a kiosk or stall or stand? I think any of those words would be fine (I’d probably go with kiosk). Otherwise, could you call it an eatery and then describe it in detail to let the reader know what you’re visualizing?

I'd use stall, or maybe booth. Or, The Cookie Counter...

I think a kiosk is always free standing, not something in a normal store space.
My wife is pushing for storefront.

I don’t think it’s a storefront — what you’ve described sounds like a standalone stall or stand.

Stall. I can't place from where exactly 'cause it was many years ago, but I recall shallow storefronts like you describe advertised for rent as "stalls".

Sometimes if I don't know what something is called, I just write that. You could say, "One of those places at the mall where they sell pretzels. I like mustard on mine."

Concession stand. Food stall. Food counter. Cookie counter. I think store would work, too -- a store doesn't have to be something you go inside.

Stall is close.

But you’re correct, there’s an industry buzzword too, seatless or something to that effect.

Since it's in a mall could it be a part of a food court?

The space could be a food stall, vendor stall, concession stand or food pavillion (that according the google).

Given that he sells cookies, I might call it a cookie stall or cookie counter.

You could also use the business name and loosen the requirement to describe the space. "He owns Cookie Bliss down at the mall. You know--that counter by Nordstrom."

That's not nice. When I was a little girl I used to LOVE those pretzels!
I bet it seemed magical when the vendor waved their wand (a length of bamboo with a head of stranded plastic at the end) over the display and the flies rose, as one, to reveal the delicacies below.

Flies pitch on fly pitches (in English, double entendre).

In NZ, they are called a "Hole in the Wall."
A small shop, that only has a a counter. No doors, or windows. Shop access from the back...
