what spirit, and by spirit i refer to the distilled essence of various forms of plant life as opposed to a metaphysical entity that may or not exist based on your preferred religious/nonreligious form of expression, is your preferred?

A single malt scotch...Glenfidditch...Glenlivet...Laphroaig...come to mind. :D

Guinness is always good, but the last beer I bought was Leinenkugel Creamy Dark Lager.
 
Bourbon, Scotch, Canadian, Irish....or Jack. I don't care, as long it's a well aged whiskey. :D
 
In terms of beer.....

Lager: Sam Adams, Fat Tire, or Foster's....otherwise...not interested.

Ale: Guinness comes foremost to mind. Sam Adams Winter Ale sounds interesting, though.

Sam's Winter Brew is purty durn good. I usually buy 6 or 8 12 paks...that carries me to at least next August...September, if I ration it. :D
 
Er... wines and beers are not distilled spirits. Distilled spirits have been boiled and recondensed to increase the alcohol content to greater than about 10% (or 20 proof). Basically speaking, spirits are distilled beer and wine.

Most spirits -- whisky, scotch, vodka, gin -- are made from distilled fermented grain. Brandy is distilled wine. Tequila is the distilled fermented juice of the agave plant. Rum is distilled fermented sugar cane.

That being said, I'm an Irish whiskey drinker. I'll drink single malt scotch too, but since I don't like that medicinal peaty taste and that's the whole point of scotch, there's no sense in paying that kind of money for what I can better get in Irish.

Note that Irish whiskey is spelled with an extra 'e'. No one knows why. Good Irish is very smooth and creamy with a dark, buttery or caramel flavor and a slick, breathless finish. It's not as sweet as bourbon and has more body.

I like Jameson. I don't like Bushmill's that much; it's too thin. I like Tullamore Dew the best, but that's hard to find.

I'm a real pain in the ass know-it-all.

happily not knowing there is anything lacking in bushmills here! I only tend to stay away from it on account of it is seriously too smooth....
 
Islay single malt scotch, high quality vodka in martini form, VSOP Brandy

There is little I won't drink, but those are my holy trinity.
 
Vodka lately, preferrably a smooth-ish one like Zyr, with a soaked black pepper corn. Sounded weird til I tried it.
 
Two drinks I can't get anymore:

Slivovica (Slivovitz) from the former Yugoslavia. I used to drink the 140 proof version.

Bob ***'s (name excised to protect the guilty) "Vintage Cider" from Biddenden in Kent. Old Bob is long gone and so is his illegal still. His "Vintage Cider" was distilled and sold and labelled as 8% alcohol. Everyone "knew" that the drink was actually 80 proof but Old Bob continued to sell it until he died. His family decided that 20 years of undetected law-breaking was enough and sold the business without the still.

No, you're not. You beat me to pointing this out. There's never anything wrong with accuracy— you shouldn't feel any need to apologize for presenting the facts.

As for me, I don't drink hard liquor. I discovered ( the hard way ) as a youth that ingestion of even modest quantities of the stuff had the unsalutary effect of making me really, really stupid. ( okay, I fully realize that's a perfect lead-in for some of the resident wise guys ).

As for beer, t'ain't nuffin' as purely delicious as swilling a "greenie" ( a/k/a a Heineken ) in the cockpit when the anchor's down after a long day of sailing hard and fast. The mere act of writing the preceding sentence made my salivary glands begin to drool— and, ren, you stole my usual exclamation following said act of swilling: "Ahhhhhhhhhh, nectar of the gods!"

When I'm not on the water, a good ol' room temperature Guinee ( a/k/a a Guinness ) is the essence of delight.

Trysail, I also like my Guiness room temp. It is the proper way, after all.

For fun nights when I stay up til 3am partying, I use Patron XO Cafe, a delicious coffee liquer made with white Patron as its base. Delicious and will keep me going as long as I keep sipping it slowly....
 
Lost Guinness

One of the regrets of my youth was a crossing from Ireland to Liverpool on one of Her Majesty's (un-named) Ships, a ship of WWII vintage.

We had used the minelaying racks to carry a substantial number of casks of genuine Dublin Guinness when we encountered a severe gale.

We lost the Guinness (and a couple of ship's boats and assorted topside equipment) overboard.

The boats and equipment could be replaced after copious paperwork.

The Guinness was lost forever...

I once "sailed across the sea to Ireland" (in my own sailing boat) and tied up in Dublin. Walking around I got to the dock and came across the "Amanda Guiness" - a tanker ship whose sole purpose was exporting the black magic. I didn't actually go down on my knees, but was greatly tempted...

Back on thread, my favourite spirit is basic Spanish brandy - Osborn's Vetarano for preference.

Failing that, any cheap brandy will do. Sorry, but the cognacs and armagnacs just don't do it for me.

Or there's G & T mixed by the pint...

Mind you, there are also cocktails - a good one (at least for UK drinkers) is what I call a Bally Fortress. Aldi do a nice cheap French brandy. They also do a cheap Baileys copy called Ballycastle - mix the two roughly 50/50 (according to taste) and that's a Bally Fortress.

(Note for non-native English speakers, such as those from the US, "bally" is a recognised euphamism for "bloody" - read as "f**cking" or "sodding".)
 
Well, if you've every been among the fortunate few to have tasted, let alone posessed, a half gallon jar of Wilkes County, NC, non poisonious, corn likker, then you know what true quality spirits are. When you find a jar that has a very, very, very yellow cast (I like to call it a pale vanilla cast) and will "bead," form tee, tee tiny little clear white bubbles, spaced about one each half inch or so, around the edge of the jar, when you slap your hand down on top of the closed lid, you will have something akin to 150 proof that goes down smoother than a hookers thong full of Astroglide. Some chase it with beer (Bud or Miller, maybe Lone Star but none of that imported shit like Coors), but they are real pussies.

Wine is preferred these days. Cheap, sweet wine from "my" winery or the Choya plum wine I "discovered" at JammiesFest two years ago. For stronger, absinthe. (I like the Strong68 from alandia.de) Third on the list is Absolut flavored vodka or Stolichnaya plain.
 
I'm a single malt scotch fan. I like Macallan best out of the big "name" distilleries.

However, I enjoy experimentation and new flavors. So, right now I am craving that NC corn moonshine Eddie was raving about....
