...The memorial coordinator asked about his relationship to the deceased. Ketterson said that John Fliszar was his husband.

“They were always polite, but there was this moment of hesitation,” Ketterson recalled. “They said they’re going to need something in writing from a blood relative. They asked, ‘Are you listed on the death certificate?’ ‘Do you have a marriage license?’ ”

...

Ketterson sent a copy of the marriage license. That changed everything.

“I was respected,” he said. “From that moment on, I was next of kin. They were amazing.”

The USNA alumni association sent Ketterson a letter expressing condolence for the loss of his husband.
The students of these academies will be the naval officers of the next generation. This is how change happens.

Things like this show we're moving forward, slowly at times, but surely.

Thanks for sharing.

It's an interesting contrast with the way the military treats living GLBT personnel, isn't it!

RIP John Fliszar and thank you for your service.

The military has gotten better over the years. In recent years a practicing Pagan man was buried with full honors, and despite policy his religious symbol was placed on his tombstone. His widow received a call from President Bush who sincerely apologizing for the issue, and said no soldier should be denied his or her faith.

This is different I know, but it was nice to know that all they needed was the paper work and the man got to honor the love of his life the way he wanted.

Many I've encountered in military circles don't want gays to serve, but more often than not, most don't seem to care. I'm still unsure on things personally, but you can't send people off to fight for freedom against repression around the globe and ask them to come home and accept being second class citizens when they come home.

I'm glad his husband was able to honor his lover's wishes.
