all i can say......is just wow.......talk about kept me riveted in my chair for two hours.....

for those of you who haven't seen it.....it's a documentary made by Jules and Gideon Naudet......it started out as a documentary just about Engine 7 and one of their rookies.....or probie as they called him in the film....a probationary firefighter just beginning his career in the summer of 2001...in New York City....

i guess it could've ended up on public television had the events of morning of September 11 not occured.....these two filmmakers were living with the crew of Engine 7.......just documenting day to day life....a boy becoming a man kinda plan to their film.....

on the morning of September 11, one of the Naudets was with one of the firetrucks answering a gas leak call.....you hear this loud roar.....and the camera angles up to the sky.....following the huge plane into the first tower......you hear everyone's reaction......watch as they pile into the trucks......and call in the first report of it.....their chief with them....rushing through the streets of NYC to get to the towers.....

i was overwhelmed......could not believe it as they arrived on scene......filming the chaos going on at the base of the first tower......then the guy filmed everything going on in the lobby of the first tower.....the set up of the command post.....the arrival of hoards of firefighters.....the chaplain pacing and praying........windows shattered at first floor level......you hear loud thumps which are presumably bodies.....when the second plane hits........you watch the reactions......you see the debris falling.......

watching it wasn't a morbid thang.....it's......well........god it just filled in so many blanks.......my curiosity......about what it was like street level.......as we all watched just the tippy tops of the towers for that hour or so.....

this morning i read several articles about the Naudet brothers.....just thrust into the spotlight......both filming at risk.......both not knowing if the other survived toward the end......just.......these incredible lil guys........who deliberately chose not to film any of the gore.......the bodies on fire......the bodies falling.....landing......chose not to.........because there was just no reason to capture those images......they simply documented the firefighters.....

my heart stopped as you hear the roar of the first building grumbling........watch as they run......watch as it goes black.......they cheer as they survive........omg......total drama.......but fucking real......

apparently CBS aired this film first in March.....i never watch tv so all of this coverage is new to me......i think there were some concerns from the families regarding that first airing....sensitivity issues.....understandable of course......

it just blows my mind though......that all of that was caught on film.....i keep thinking about it.....it was suiting to watch last night, for me at least.......every one of the firefighters from that engine company made it out safely.......i cried as i watched them arriving back at the house at different times......the hugging and crying.....just devastation on their faces.......relief......shock.....***** would never be the same......for anyone......

and then their efforts in search and rescue were documented......and both Jules and Gideon Naudet actually helped.....with the effort....in addition to filming it......the articles i've read said the brothers sold the documentary to CBS ( i think they also sold clip of first plane hitting building, the only video of that available i believe).......covered expenses........but haven't made a huge chunk of money.......nor has CBS......it's history documented......and it was a privilege to get to watch it last night......

every single firefighter killed was honored at end as they flashed their photographs......several times during the broadcast the address info for a Firefighter Familes relief fund was put up......

anyway......i just can't stop thinking about it.....just a piece of history......thanks to Jules and Gideon Naudet, CBS and FDNY Engine Company 7.....for sharing it with us all.....

i'm sure a lot of you viewed it in March......or last night......

what did you think about it? wasn't it like surreal?

It was shown here in France. People have been talking about it all day. Extremely powerful for my kids.

It was indeed riveting to get such a visceral first hand account of it all. It definitely put you in the middle of the horrible events, and it also was at its heart a very personal, very human story.

Yes I saw it the first time it aired and I was really moved by it. I found it interesting that the probie firefighter they were filming hadn't been on one call prior to the events of Sept 11. Whoa talk about going from a boy to a man!

I watched it last night and was very moved by the way it was presented almost as much as the footage itself. I am very very glad that I watched it. It helped me.

They showed it here in Denmark as well yesterday, and I was also stuck on the couch in front of it.

It's amazing how the images of it just seems to burn into your brain, and won't go away again.

i wish i had taped it to watch again......maybe they'll come out with a video later.....i hate to commercialize the thing.....but i'd buy it......maybe money made could go to the fund they promoted last night.....

I saw it in March too.

If you had only one documentary to see, it was this one!!!

Tell me freescorfr, was it in french? Last night they show it on a french channel but in english with sous-titre (under writing?) in french.

I watched it on BBC1. No emotion, no feelings what so ever. After one year of continuous bomberdment of images and sounds, it seems I became imune to what happened on 9/11. Unreal? Yes. I don't live in the real world.

Anyway, it's true. Violent images on TV and movies do numb the mind of people.

What about porn?

I watched that last night - it was one of the most powerful things I had ever seen. Extremely moving.

Hmmm. I kinda wish I hadn't spent all night here talking about foriegn objects up my ass.

well....the have made the documentary available on VHS and DVD....my thoughtful turtle.....who knew how moved i was by it.....and that i wanted to watch it again.....found the tape on amazon.com and sent it to me....as a lil surprise....so sweet....

i saw it at Wal-Mart as well....

if you haven't seen it.....it really is worth getting.....a part of history documented....just by chance....

proceeds from tape sales are going to one of the firemen's association.....

I saw it on 9/11

And, it was so touching. I don't think I really realised the effect on the families until I saw it!
