I just discovered on a website that some people have luck curing nail fungus with Vicks Vap-O-Rub, instead of paying hundreds for a prescription anti-fungal medication that can be damaging to the liver. I'm going to try it.

In this era of huge drug companies making ridiculous profits by selling us medicine, I feel that the only thing we can do at a grass-roots level is fight their marketing by using natural and low-cost alternative remedies shared among us. The internet is a great resource for that; for example, last year I was afflicted with chronic, unexplained hives. Nothing the doctors were trying helped me and I was losing my mind from the itch. While reseraching hives on the internet, I ran across the suggestion that some doctors prescribe ranitidine for chronic hives. Ranitidine is generic for Zantac, a drug used to treat gastric reflux. My doctors had never mentioned it, or tried it, so I got some inexpensive over-the-counter Zantac and started tacking it every day. The hives cleared up within three days. If not for someone sharing their story on the internet, I never would have known about this treatment or tried it. I made sure to tell my doctor about it, in case he might help someone else suffering like I was with chronic hives.

What natural remedies or alternative treatments do you swear by? Post them here, so we can learn from them; then maybe somebody will try them out and give a testimonial.

This may be TMI, but for a yeast infection get syringe and fill it full of natural unsweetened yogurt and insert like you would a presription the natural cultures help. It works better than any cream and is WAAAY cheaper!

Not TMI. I, for one, did not know that. :)
Yogurt is filled with probiotics, natural bacteria that is awesome for your digestive tract; I'm not surprised it helps with yeast infections.

Thanks Dar!

I swear by warm water and honey to soothe a sore throat, a little squish of lemon juice helps too, if you've got some. It's about a teaspoon of honey to a small cup of warm water and a couple of drops of lemon juice.

tea tree oil is good for spots. a little drop on some cotton wool then on the spotty area will work wonders.

Lavender oil (a little drop) on a piece of kitchen roll/hanky and slipped into a pillow slip will help you nod off (works really well on my daughter!) Lavender oil is also good for easing rashes, my sister uses a little drop when her exema flares up.

I'm sure I've got more, My mum is a qualified alternative therapies person, she knows natural cures and aids for lots of things :)

Theres also the bee sting and tobacco cure. When I was little, I got stung be three bees at the same time. The play house we were in had a hive in it and no one knew. I leaned my hand back and landed it on a little cluster of bees. they all got me. My mom cleaned it off and emptied the tobacco out of one of her cigs moistened it and put it on the stings. the swelling went down and the pain went away a lot. See, tobacco isn't inherantly evil.

Aloe for burns is good too. I spilled a vaporizer on my face when I was four or five. by all rights I should be scarred, but my mom used a ton of aloe vera from her plant and My face is stunning.:D

Eating more cauliflower and brocolli will strengthen hair nad nails and encourage growth. As will the vitamin Biotin.

If you are suffering from Anemia, more dark green leafies will up your iron faster than meat.

washing your hair with Vinegar is actually a great way to clean your scalp and is cheaper than clarifying shampoos.

Before my physician prescribed preventative allergy meds, I suffered frequent yeast infections from repeated use of antibiotics for sinus infections. Yogurt works great, but you can get yogurt capsules at the health food store and they work just as well and are a lot less messy. You store them in the refrigerator, but they last for a long time and don't expire quickly like edible yogurt.

Also, ginger capsules for motion sickness and morning sickness work wonders, also available at the health food store.

Toothpaste on a zit overnight sometimes clears it up, or Visine on it to reduce redness.

Preparation H for sunburn or minor burns. Trust me on this.

I'll post more as I think of them.

Its enough for one application and I've never needed more. I have never suffered from chronic ones though except when I was pregnant and they put me on Prednisone.

I know about the aloe vera.

I once took the tip of my index finger of on the page of a book. I should have a really interesting scar there.

But some friends gave me an aloe plant and I cut a leaf and spread on the wound for a while. It healed perfectly. You'd never know I was cut there.

Aloe for burns is good too. .

It's not so much the tobacco but the chemicals they add to it. *cough*

Anyway, my mom swore by the aloe too. It's also great for sunburns.

I'm going to try washing my hair with vinegar. My water's so hard, my hair's a wreck from buildup. Also, mixing one part vinegar with two parts water in a spray bottle makes a great all-purpose kitchen cleaner. We ran out of spray cleaner the other day and tried it, and it worked so well, we were amazed and we're never buying 409 again. :D

I understand expense wise. Since I had them so frequently and we live in an extremely rural area, it was wiser for me to keep the capsules stocked in the fridge. Only about 7 bucks US for a large bottle.

I hadn't thought of candied ginger. Thankfully, no more kids on the way, but I'll remember it to pass on to others.

Vinegar is also really really good for pet urine. If a dog or cat tends to pee in the same spot in the house pour straight vinegar on the spot and let it sit for an hour then soak up the excess. the odor that keeps the pet coming back to that spot should be gone. It's never failed me in twelve animal owning years or when I was a kid with pets.

The website also suggested tea tree oil for the nail fungus. If the cheapie Vicks doesn't work, I'll try the tea tree. :)

Vinegar is good for dandruff as well. Most dandruff is caused by a Ph imbalance and the vinegar restores it.

If possible, get vinegar made from apple cider. It smells a lot better than the regular kind.

For some reason I can't stand the smell of cider vinegar. I think I might be allergic to it. The white vinegar doesn't bother me as much. I'll just smell like a pickle :D

Different strokes etc. ;)

Dump old baking soda from freshening your fridge in your drain and follow it with vinegar. Cool to watch and cleans out your pipes!

Years back I went to the mountains on a cabin trip with a fairly large group of friends (everyone was college age); daily shopping trips were made to keep the frige full of all the treats, snacks, sweets, and basics that everyone was eating. One of the girls, a pretty and brainy vegetarian, had a yeast infection, and when the shopping list was made up for the day, she asked for yogurt. She did not, unfortunately, let the two guys doing the shopping know why she wanted it.

They came back and proudly presented her with strawberry yogurt--fruit mixed in. She hadn't stated what flavor, they told her, and so they'd discussed it at length before picking out this one, thinking she'd like it :D

I use vinegar as a final rinse, and do olive oil treatments every so often, it's completely eradicated my itchy scalp (so itchy I scratched till it bled) and my hair is shinier and softer than before.

Apparently live yoghurt treatments can help with itchy scalp too, though I haven;t tried that one yet, since the oliveoil/vinegar has worked so well.

Olive oil is good for cradle cap on babies, too.

Bicarb of soda makes a good odour eliminator - put some in the fridge to get rid of bad smells, or dust the inside of smelly shoes with it!

Oh - and avocado and honey makes a great moisturising face mask, though I'd rather eat the avocado as a general rule :D

Tea tree oil for cuts, zits and sore throats (gargle a few drops of it in some water)

Neat vodka for ear infections.

Headaches - tiger balm

General aches, pains and low spirits - cannabis

Lol.

Classic.

Also some people don;t realise that it has to be live yoghurt... I remember seeing a post on a forum by someone who used Greek Yoghurt and wondered why it hadn;t worked. Oops.
:D

Mind you using a very mild vinegar rinse can help with yeast infections, or mild tea tree or ... I believe, even bicarb. Salt is good too, but vinegar is the best. Run a shallow, tepid bath (couple of inches) and put a small cup of white vinegar in. It restores the PH balance of the area.

I used to suffer dreadfully before I ditched towels and tampons so I'm up on all the tricks. Luckily my yoghurt consumption has decreased massivle these days :D

TMI?

Everytime I hear about tea tree oil, I think of your thread a while back. LOL.

Also great for nausea, or so people tell me. :D

Pour it into your ear.

Cannabis is great for most things  Did you know it's an active ingredient in asthma inhalers? My brother in law saves the NHS money and just uses a bong whenever his chest is feeling tight :D
