Two days after the most recent elimination of a Socialist candidate in the first round by the Front National party, a UMP [mainstream right-wing party in France, Sarkozy's party] functionary ponders: ”The FN is the second most popular party in France right now.”

On 16 June, the Socialist party is eliminated in the first round in Villeneuve-sur-Lot. Marine Le Pen (photo above) then congratulated herself: her party “has become the centre of gravity of political life”.

An electric shock that resembles a warning one year from the local elections and, above all, the European elections. According to a poll carried out by the British institute Yougov, the party of Marine Le Pen would win 18% of the votes in the next European elections, just behind the UMP and in front of the Socialist party...

Unlike the trend in the English speaking world, the nationalist right is far from dead in many places and is in fact growing.

I know they are saying that Marine is "moving the party to the center" so I'm not sure how much I trust her. She kind of reminds me of the Ron Paul - Rand Paul thing. Trust the dad, not so sure about the kid. Still, moving to the center from where the Front was under her dad would hardly make it some flaming lib party in US terms.

Mass numbers of Front National members...

coming to a European Parliament near you.

In the 2012 election to the National Assembly, the Socialists polled 29%, the UMP 27%, and the FN 13%. The FN has a lot of catching up to do, and you're madly optimistic if you think they've started based on this one election and this one poll.

No, no there are numerous articles saying the same thing. If the Presidental elections were held today, all the major polls are saying that it would be Sarkozy vs. Marine Le Pen in the runoffs and Hollande would be elimminated in the first round.

Furthermore, over half the population now feel that the FN should be invited to join governing coalitions on local councils, up from a third two years ago. I was surprised as anyone when I read this since I haven't been following France at all lately.
