Time to vent;

Last night I had an HIV positive male come in. He is very sick and a very nice person. He was telling me that his neighbors harass him all the time. It got so bad that they shot and killed one of his dogs and wounded the other. To make matters worse, they ran him off the road 2 nights ago. His story is genuine because it was printed in the paper. My thing is if someone don't agree with someone elses lifestyle, why act violently towards it. My advice when he ased me how to retaliate was to let the authorities handle it because most of these people are trying to illicite a response and when we respond in a negative manner, not only do we lower ourselves to their level, we give them the response they are seeking.

Vinny - As a former paramedic, I am aware of the challenges of dealing with HIV, both for the patient and the healthcare provider. It is a totally unique set of circumstances. Most people who are "afraid of" or hostile toward persons with HIV do so out of fear and ignorance of the disease, IMO.

It is depressing at times to realize that we live in a world where a person is persecuted because of their lifestyle choice. Or even because of their HIV status.

I applaud you for your compassion toward this person and your indignation at their treatment. I'll bet you're one helluva good nurse!

My dearest friend is a homosexual man that is also HIV positive. I have seen some of his friends and family abandon him in his time of need, he has been harrassed and victimised by many.
Its a sad, sad world.

I'm afraid his treatment by his neighbors just reflects the level of ignorance and unjustified fear that many people have. You're a good guy, Vinny for being there for him!

my best male friend is gay (but not HIV pos. - thank god). I'm one of three persons at University who know he is gay, because he fears that people will reject/harass him.
I think this is so sad that in a society where adultry, murder and different relgions are very much part of our everyday "culture" people who love "differently" (but more often more passionately) still get harassed.
It makes me sad.

God that makes me want to be sick how can people be so horrible? I'll never undersand and to take the owners sexually/AIDs issues out on his dogs THAT IS FUCKED it's bad enough they have a go at him for his lifestyle but to take it out on the poor animals UGH it makes me ashamed to be human and it's not like he is hurting them by being gay and HIV positive so why do they have to go out of the way to be such assholes can they just let him live in peace

Its a sad fact of life that people who are 'different' are often singled out for special treament. Perhaps one day, if we all try really hard, everyone will be as tolerant as the majority of people on Lit.

And good for you Vinny. We should value people like you more than we do. We will all probably need a nurse some day. Let's hope he/she is as compassionate as Vinny.

If your patient can prove all this, he should talk to someone about hate crimes and have them prosecuted.
