Two Scottish scientists have announced a nanoswitch using adjacent molecules to 'switch' an electrical signal, the building block of all computer chips. The design, if implemented, would allow memory on a single computer chip to be of an order of 500,000 Gbytes - that's some way from my 64k Apple II.

Sony have also announced the 4Terabyte DVD, that's 800 times the storage capacity of a conventional DVD, folks, you could keep all your porn on one disc. :D

You just know it would become defective then you'd be crying for a week. ;)

I was wondering when that would happen.

If you want to see what might happen when nanotech gets going I recommend The Diamond Age: Or, a Young Lady's Illustrated Primer by Neal Stephenson.

Both quite wondrous and frightening at the same time. In the first chapter a street thug gets his skull gun gun upgraded. Yes, he can fit a gun in his skull.

In the next nanotech engineers build a magic island for a princess' birthday party. It lasts a day and then disappears again.

A very good book.

And not be able to look at it on any computer they make today

I just got my new PC last week, and it came with a floppy for $1. I didn't think it was worth unclicking it just as a joke :D

Actually, I need a 3-1/2" floppy drive about once every 18 months, so having one's probably a good idea. But it's a damn rare thing, I'll tell yuh.

I don't think it was just any Scotsman who came up with the idea... ;)

Yo, Neon, where did you see this announcement? I'd like to read the original article.
