A thread for all the little details you just need someone to help you with.

I need a small town in Texas. Not tiny village, but small enough so that the idea of universitying in England would seem very cosmopolitan. And preferably an area of Texas with a similar accent to Amy Acker's in Angel if poss, cause htat's where my char's accent is nicked from.

Anyone help?

The Earl

Bellaire, Tx has a population of about 17,000. I don't know about the accent though.

Amarillo, Lubbok, TexarKanna, Tyler. these are medium sized towns, not huge places like san antonioa, Houston or Dallas Ft-worth, but larege enough to be recognizeable to most americans, if that's what you are shooting for.

Tyler is central TExas; Amarillo and Lubbock are west Texas. Texarkana is east Texas. I would go with Tyler, personally. As for accent, it depends on the person. Texans in general have accents, some more than others, and it has little to do with what part of the state you live in.

I need help. Can one of our lovely females describe the sensation of a lactating breast. How does it feel? How does it smell? (I know this but I'd like more input) Do breasts involuntarily leak or is this a male fantasy myth? These facts are crucial to the story and not just to satisfy my own... my own.

I'll pm you. :)

Ok, lets see -it smells like sweetened milk, muskier than cows milk, i seem to remeber a quite vanilla like scent..

A lactating breast tingles when it's full, it's almost painful, and if left too long it IS painful. Yes, lactating breasts leak, only a litle dribble for me, but they did do it of their own accord sometimes.
My breasts felt heavy, full, the skin tight. My nipples were extremely sensitive, and if my breast was too full, the tingle would focus on the nipple, like my nipple had pins and needles....

Does that help any?

Those are nice medium size cities, so you can go with one. Going to England won't be unheard of, but rare enough to be exceptional. Probably the biggest selector in choosing one is the geography. West Texas is desert, cattle, and oil. East Texas has more plains, more trees, lazy rivers, etc. What everyone around did for a living will change based on this. One is farming; one is ranching. For East Texas, think more Texas A&M. If you want West Texas, there are a couple towns along I-10, whose names I am forgetting, which used to be an oil capital of Texas. Hmm... Just look along a map.

For accent, Texas is basically a Southern. One distinctive feature is "warsh" for wash with other r-insertions. If you want to spend time on this, you can listen to former Gov. Ann Richards at the American Rhetoric SpeechBank. Just do a search.

Don't forget the TexMex influence. Most Texans know a smattering of Spanish words, with a gigantic English accent of course.

Engorged breasts can be quite hard -- and feel hot to the touch -- when full. Milk "let down" is a tingly sensation ... like a numb limb waking up, but not quite as prickly ... and will occur spontaneously if too long a time passes between nursings. So, yes -- breasts can involuntarily leak. It is not common with regular nursing -- but very common if a fixed interval (which varies based on how often a baby nurses) is exceeded.

Nipples can become QUITE sore from frequent nursing.

Yes, breasts can definitely leak, enough that some women have to wear padding or tissues of some sort to hide little wet spots. Some women leak more when there was a crying baby around or some such, but I can't verify. The sensation of being full to the point of pain at times should not be forgotten. It's a very large part of the experience. Nursing mothers will use a pump to relieve the pressure if their child doesn't nurse frequently enough.

Agreed in full.

Can't forget letdown - when the milk is released in a big gush. This can happen in the most embarrassing places you can think of. It can be triggered by pressure on the breast, especially around the nipple, or by sounds. The sound of a baby crying caused this in the middle of the store one time. That was less than wonderful.

The sensation of letdown is almost sexual. There's a hard pressure, almost vice-like, on the whole breast, then an intense tingle around the nipple and areola.

In the first few days after birth the pre-milk is the only thing produced, leaving the breasts smaller. The colostrum (pre-milk) is thicker and sweeter, almost like cream. When the milk comes in is when the breasts get big (mine went up a full four cup sizes - even a nursing bra wouldn't fit) and get extremely tender. About a week or so later the woman's body adjusts and starts producing just enough milk for the baby and her breasts adjust in size.

The first week to week and a half are also hell on nipples. That's when they can chap and crack, sometimes enough to bleed. Then her body gets used to having a baby latched on every hour or so and heals. During that adjustment period it's actually very painful for anything to touch them.

And if you are actually going to be going into women nursing their children - not just their husbands ;) - then remember that it takes a lot of time to learn to nurse. Some infants have very weak sucks for a little while. Sometimes the mother is stressed and has a hard time with let down. There is an industry of lactation consultants to help people with this. Usually, within a couple weeks, mother and baby figure it out, but not immediately. Also, not every woman experiences let down when someone other than their child attempts to nurse.

I had a nauseous feeling, it was awesome (yeah thats sarcasm) Mostly sweet dairy, almost like if you were smelling sweetened cream. leakage. I ended up buying a new matress. And that was with sleeping on towels.

If you have questions on pumping, I'm your girl. My daughter had a stomach issue (acually still does) and had an accute fear of breasts for several months. Meetings with lactation consultants, oh I am your reference ;) Someday I'll include the info you can drive and pump at the same time in a story, that would definately belong in a fetish catagory.

Help me!

What does a person do while sitting in a hospital waiting room when they're really confused (couple of days after getting a concussion type confused) and are there to visit somebody, but can't remember how to get to their room? The character's doctor has been paged, and she needs to wait for him to get there. Any suggestions?

Most likely someone staff like would get a nurse to take the person's vitals and they would be observed constantly, BIG malpractice lawsuit if someone falls over dead just waiting in a waiting room. More than likely they would be taken somewhere and 'observed' until the Dr got there.

I agree with Alex. While I have been in an Emergency Room enough to see people bleeding and vomiting while they wait, they won't be waiting in the Lobby for the doctor. They are waiting for a nurse or other staff (or just a room/bed) to become free. That's who will show up first. Once they get into the room, it might be half an hour before someone sees them, but getting them in the room is the first step.

Once there, I guess it depends on just how confused they are. Most people read the one magazine in there, or the children's book, or even the dumb brochures or posters for some medicine. Other than that they pace around the room, lie on the bed feeling sorry for themselves, or try to eavesdrop on all that is going on around them. You should be able to spend a good bit of time observing the sights and sounds of the hospital - even in a confused state.

hmm... Must not have made myself clear.

She was admitted to the same hospital after an accident, then released. She went back to visit the friend that was still there, but had forgotten how to get to his room. One of the nurses had the doctor that had looked after her paged and is sitting with her in the lobby/waiting room area by the front door until the doc arrives.

lol, yeah, I didn't get that. With new understanding, I say forget all the bit about getting to a room, but what she would do in the lobby - read, people-watch, twiddle thumbs - would be the same. If she becomes too impatient doing these things, there are two options I can think of - 1) ask again, making a bigger stink, and 2) start wandering to see if anything looks familiar. You can make the wandering as harmless or sneaky as is appropriate. In other words, does she just have to wander down the hall or does she sneak through the doors while the admin is turned away, pretending she belongs there?
