Naming Poems

Did anyone else ever have a mental block when trying to name a sonnet (or any other poem)? I think I iambicly fried my brain.

I once had so much trouble naming a poem I eventually just titled the damned thing "Untitled".

But usually for me the name comes first.

not really done the naming thing yet, lol. written a couple of bits as replies and i don't think they had titles. and just posted my one for the challenge, so i didn't have to choose a title for that. how do you guys normally go about choosing your titles?

The title of any poem either doesn't exist or is part of the poem. (I don't mean it's extracted from the body of text, but that it is a part of the poem, another line.) So, in a way, that's like asking if I have a block when writing the 14th line of a sonnet, or if I have a block when writing the 1st line of any poem. Those are the three more important isolated lines in a sonnet, but they're not isolated lines. They're part of a whole. If I'm having a block with one of them, then odds are I'm having a much bigger problem with writing the poem as a whole.

Usually, the name is absolutely obvious to me. I generally think of the title while I'm writing the poem. I think that's my problem with naming this sonnet. It's really my first attempt at a sonnet. While I was writing it, I was concentrating on saying what I want to say while following the form.

Last night, I took it with me to the writing group I go to. The sonnet is true to the form, which is what I asked the poets there. It just needs a title! LOL

You could always just call it 'Sonnet #1'. That is, assuming that you'll write more of them.
I often just try to sum up, in one word or concise phrase, what the poem's supposed to be about.

Heh, yes. The title always comes last for me. And by the time I'm done with a sonnet, it's usually just the topic + sonnet + number. I have Depression Sonnet #3 and Erotic Sonnet #7, etc.
