It's not meant for writers, but it covers most cultures and it has a feature where you can search for a name's meaning, or you can search for a names that have a particular meaning. Or you can look by first letter.

Yay! It helps tremendously when you're stuck. It's free too!

KM everything's to do with writers...

...if I'm writing a period piece I've always found a good source for the names of the period is the local cemetery. It's and old way of doing things but still works. I've used some great names copied from gravestones.

My favourite was Albert Chickenfeathers who was buried in Deptford London 1822.

Wow...

Looks like I should visit this board more frequently. KM, we actually agree on something there. Easily around 15-16 I bought 35,000 + Baby Names and Meanings for the sole purpose of character names for stories. (Most of my writing back then was horror, though. lol) (And, I think I freaked the hell out of my mom once she noticed the book. lol) I've never been one who cared much for "plain Jane" names, and this book was a God-sent.

Names

I take the easy out. I look in the newspaper at the new brides names, or if there is a big listing of them, the real estate ladies.

Thanks Muff for the URL. How can ANYONE have over 5,500 posts?????

Ask Renegade and R Nightlight who both have well in excess of 8,000 posts.

It comes from having a LOT of free time and a lot of great people to post with.

And thanks for the link.
