Not speaking French (let alone reading it) can be a problem at times.
So I had to look him up. Does that still count ? (Saint Exubury )

Antoine de Saint Exupéry?

A little too late. Too much time Googling the spelling, too.

Hi! Ah. This list rings no bells at all. I'm afraid I'd have to resort to googling and that's cheating. I'll stop by a little later, though, when the list changes and try my luck again.

Who is the author that wrote "Saving Private Ryan?"

You don't have to look it up, here is the answer.

Probably, the best WWII movie ever made, and nobody
knows who wrote it. I hope he was compensated well
for the giving us such a great epic of history.

Saving Private Ryan is a 1998 American war film
set during the invasion of Normandy in World War
II.

It was directed by Steven Spielberg and written by
Robert Rodat.

The film is notable for the intensity of its
opening 25 minutes, which depict the Omaha
beachhead assault of June 6, 1944. Afterward, it
follows Tom Hanks as Captain John H. Miller and
several men (Tom Sizemore, Edward Burns, Barry
Pepper, Vin Diesel, Giovanni Ribisi, Adam
Goldberg and Jeremy Davies) as they search for a
paratrooper (Matt Damon), who is the last surviving
brother of three fallen servicemen.

Rodat first came up with the film's story in 1994
when he saw a monument dedicated to four brothers
born to Agnes Allison of Port Carbon, PA, who died
during the American Civil War.

The monument was erected twenty-three years after
her first son was killed. Inspired by the story,
Rodat decided to write a similar story set during
World War II.

The script was submitted to producer Mark Gordon,
who then handed it to Hanks. It was finally given
to Spielberg, who had previously demonstrated his
interest in WWII themes with films such as
Schindler's List, and decided to direct Saving
Private Ryan after reading the film's script. The
film's premise is very loosely based on the
real-life case of the Niland brothers.

this one is tough!

This is the full text of the first sentence of one of his novels (not one I've listed):

It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents, except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which swept up the streets (for it is in London that our scene lies), rattling along the housetops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness.

The (in)famous Bulwer-Lytton.

Og's clue is a dead giveaway. That's one of the most famous opening lines in all of literature— the inspiration for the well-known Bulwer-Lytton Prize.

Clue: It was a dark and stormy night...

Gone with the Wind,

Published on June 30, 1936, is a romantic novel and
the ONLY novel written by Margaret Mitchell.

The story is set in Jonesboro and Atlanta, Georgia
during the American Civil War and Reconstruction
and follows the life of Scarlett O'Hara, the
daughter of an Irish immigrant plantation owner.
