Has anyone gone through a name change and if so how long did it take and did it mess with any benefits like SSD.

Thank you in advance for any help anyone can offer.

Kim

Name change processes are different in each state. Once it's done, you need extra copies of the court order with your new name to change your birth certificate (some never do, they just show BC and court order). You'll need to change your SSN, etc. It should not affect it. Many people change that into a married (or divorce) name all the time.

Contact your local Clerk of the Court in your county.

K thank you very much. I know it's 200 bucks where I live to file the petition that was as far as I've gotten.

I'll have to call SSI and see what i need to do with them next week. That's gonna take forever

Most of this can be done online. Once the c.o. is finalized, you'll need to go into the SSA to finalize it.

Also, be aware of other fees. Some states require a criminal background check and a publishing in the paper - these each have a fee.

Once that's done, it's a simple hearing.

You won't get a NEW SS number just a new name on a new card.
Yeah I saw that but I'm on disability so I want to make sure changing officially to my female name wont mess that up. Otherwise I'll have to keep male name officially and just have everyone call me Kim.

My PCM and shrink have both said they would use Kim from now on
