New York City, the city of everything but what anyone could actually imagine. Amber Walsh was an expert at finding the unknown. While everyone lived in their happy little worlds where everything was average, Amber couldn't even begin to wonder what average even was.

Amber had been a supernatural hunter for thousands of years. She couldn't remember having a normal life after she'd started hunting. Those tv shows about Buffy the Vampire Slayer, they held some truth to it but not nearly as fun. She couldn't really keep a boyfriend. Why? Not because of her, not really. There was always an enemy that would find her boyfriend and capture them.

Living single had become more of a way of life. It was sad and disappointing but it was her life, what she'd come to live with.

Tonight was like any other night. She was patroling, making sure that there were no vampires, werewolves, anything that were trying to prey on the innocent. That was when she saw him. It was probably the moment that would change her life forever. The vampire clan had pushed him against the wall, she hadn't seen how this had turned into the vampire clan attack that it was but she knew one when she saw it.

She jumped in the middle shielding him, knocking one of them down. "Run!" She told the man as she began kicking and punching the vampires. It was imperative as a hunter that beings like vampires or werewolves stay pretty hidden. People would go crazy if they knew they actually existed.

Amber

“Where do you go so late at night daddy?”

He smiled at her a smile of love and warmth. Those bright sky-blue eyes took in his daughter who was currently sitting up in her bed. Her nightlight which was princess themed cast the room in a soft green glow. She looked so small in that bed clutching the ragdoll rabbit he had given her so long ago. He moved over putting down his leather coat for a second as he reached down and kissed her hair.
“Nowhere important princess” He said smiling and stepping back “Aunt Liv is going to watch you for the night I will be back in the morning I promise”

“But what if you leave?” Isadora said clutching the rabbit closer “Like mommy?”
“Oh sweetheart” Her father Darren said stroking her hair “That won’t happen I promise”

He gave her one more kiss before moving out of her room. He slid the black leather jacket over his large broad shoulders and breathed out a long sigh. His large hand came up running through his buzzed short hair as he moved into his small cramped living room. His sister was there the TV on as she did her best to keep quiet.

“Thank you again” He said going over to the window and sliding it open.
“Why do you keep doing this?” His sister Liv asked in frustration “This gallivanting around the city all night?”

“It’s called urban exploration” Darren said sighing in frustration “I get you think its dumb but I need some me time. Between the hours in the garage and the odd jobs I pick up I need something”

“Then find something less dangerous!” Liv said throwing her hands up in frustration “Go to the gym or something. You die out there and Isadora has no one left”

Darren growled in response trying not to think about his darling daughter. Six years old and full of life and fire just like her mother. Not that she truly knew the woman who died bringing her to this earth. He wondered what she would say about his nighttime explorations if she would approve or not. A part of him liked to think she would.

A part of him thought she wouldn’t.

“I’ll be back in a few hours” He told her stepping through the window and closing it behind him. He moved over to the steel railing and looked out taking stock of the city he loved. It was a living thriving organisms with so many secrets. It was those secrets that made him feel alive that interested him.

He climbed the railing reaching the top roof. He took a deep breath and he was off launching across roof tops. He stuck to the roof tops going down only when he needed to. He reached the older districts in a matter of seconds landing in a pair of old abandoned buildings that were partially rotted. He moved to the fireplace and reached in rooting around and finally pulling out a duffel bag. He got his equipment out his climbing gear, fingerless gloves, and a knife just in case. He moved catching sight of his leather jacket and jeans and running shoes.
He spent the next hour exploring and taking pictures with his digital camera. He found places both old and new and even ran into some of his friends. When he was hungry he spent some of his cash on a burger from a street vendor and then went back to it.

It was around four in the morning when he ran into them.
They were gathered around a wall writing something as they talked. He almost jumped down on them and only caught himself at the last minute on the ledge. Even so they heard him stopped talking as their strangely black eyes regarded him.

“I don’t want any trouble” He said dropping down next to them and raising his hands “I’m just having some fun”

“Some fun?” The lead one asked a bald man with snow white skin “Some fun sounds good”

They were on him before he could do anything. He did his best to fight them off but he quickly fell to the ground. They punched and kicked him as he went down spitting out a string of curses. He moved to defend himself covering his body as he waited for them to stop.

Then suddenly they stopped fought back by a stunning woman. He scrambled to his feet as she told him to run but refused to budge.

“I can’t leave you” He said to her pulling out a knife. The demons were already running however having recognized the woman and choosing to retreat.

“Thank you” He said as they disappeared “I don’t know what got into them but I was just walking by I swear”

Amber sighed as the vampires decided to run off like little bitches. She turned towards him the alley light suddenly deciding to flicker on revealing the brunette in her leather pants, red tank top and leather jacket which did nothing to hide her 32d breasts.

She tucked her stake back in her holster so that it would still have the knife look."No problem. You really should have ran though, if one of the....thugs got away they could've hurt you."

In the light, the stranger had a handsome face. "Also hanging out in alleyways probably isn't the best idea." Amber said with a small smile. Don't do this to yourself, Amber. Don't turn on the charm.

"I should probably go."

Though something kept her from leaving right away. She wasn't sure what it was. "I would suggest not staying around this area."

“Wait”

He reached out placing a hand on her shoulder to prevent her from leaving. He coughed as he moved over to her removing his hand and jerking his thumb towards the alleyway.

“You might have just saved my life” He said softly “I don’t know what those punks would have done if you hadn’t come by. Please the least I can do is buy you a coffee or late dinner or something!”

He thought about the places around them for a few minutes before continuing to speak.

“I think there is a 24 hour café around here somewhere” He said looking around the alleyway “Have you ate yet? Kicking butt usually leaves a person starved doesn’t it?”

Oh god, this was a bad idea. Amber knew it would be but that hunger to be mortal and to have hope for something different in her life than her immortal loneliness. She pursed her lips as her forehead creased in thought. Getting something to eat wouldn't be so bad, right?

"Um, yeah sure. I guess getting a bite to eat wouldn't kill me."

Even though, in reality, she should be doing more patrolling. What if there was someone else that was being attacked at this moment and here she was, distracted. "I'm Amber, by the way." She held her hand out to shake his, goosebumps tickled her arm as they shook hands and he introduced himself.

"Lead the way, I guess."

“Cool” He said grinning as she agreed to him treating her at the local dinner. She held out her hand and he grasped it shivering slightly as she introduced herself and he felt electric sparks go up his arms.

“I’m Darren” He said smiling at her “Let’s go! I think the place is just up the street”
He turned leading her out of the alleyway and back onto the sidewalk. He looked around for a few seconds trying to orient himself. His eyes settled on a few familiar landmarks and it all came flooding back to him.

“This way!” He said pointing to the left and beginning to walk. He matched her pace his eyes widening in surprise as he saw her effortless long strides.

“Are you an urban explorer as well?” He asked wincing at how lame it sounded “The way you handled yourself was pretty amazing! And your clearly very very fit”

"Darren, it's nice to meet you Darren." She said with a smile. She followed behind him for a minute but once he told her which way to go, she started moving swiftly. Amber did glance behind her to make sure that no one was tracking them and that he was keeping up. Darren was barely keeping up which made her slow down a bit.

“Are you an urban explorer as well?”

"Urban explorer?" Amber had an amused look on her face. She lived in this area so she already had the street smarts so the term urban explorer was kind of amusing. When he rushed to explain himself. She couldn't help but start to giggle.

"Sorry, I'm not laughing at you..." Amber shrugged, "I live in this area, so I pretty much know the ins and outs of this place. What's an urban explorer?"

He winced as she said it out loud and realized how lame it sounded. He blushed a bit clearing his throat as they rounded the corner and the diner came into view.

It does not sound very cool does it?" He said chuckling and shaking his head "but its all about exploring the city. Me and a small community explore New York for treasures and just to get to know the place. Its like Parkour but involves going into abandoned factories and buildings and documenting them. Some people like me take pictures of what we see and others just go in and look at it"

As he explained they reached the diner and its flashing neon sign. He pulled the door open and waited for her to move in before following after her. They were greeted by a sour faced waitress who had all the tell tale signs of someone at the end of her shift. He did his best to smile at her as she led them to a both set on the far end of the diner. He waited for her to sit down before joining her pushing off his leather jacket to reveal a tight fitting gray shirt over his muscular chest.

"Coffee?" He asked her as he indicated a cup for himself.

Amber quietly listened to his explanation as she tucked a strand of brown hair behind her ears that had escaped from the confines of her ponytail while following him into the dining. “Well, that’s certainly interesting.” She said not wanting to be totally truthful on how incredibly nerdy it was. Though she couldn’t help but tease.

“So, recording it... like the whole Blair Witch Project thing? “ Amber gave him a playful smile as Darren pulled off his jacket. She briefly let her gaze wander down his taut muscles through the flimsy gray shirt he was wearing. Holy mother of all that was good in this world. He seemed to have a nice body that went along with handsome face.

“Coffee?”

She blinked a few times as he waited for her answer. “Wha? Ah, yes...please. Thank you.” Amber blushed and reached for the menu mainly to hide her embarrassment. “So I’ve never been here. What do you suggest?”

"Less spooky" He explained laughing "Most of my nights are quite believe it or not! And I mostly take photos I know some people that do recordings though. I would say its more like preserving history. The cities history."

When she asked if he had any recommendations he gently grasped her menu. He looked down at it studying it for several seconds before pointing at several of his favorite dishes.

"I used to come here a lot" He said leaning back and blushing slightly "My girlfriend used to work here"

A sad look crossed his eyes and he hurriedly covered it by drinking some coffee and casting his eyes down. When he glanced back up he was more composed and the smile was back on his face.

"That's....interesting..." Amber said slowly. She'd never met someone who went on adventures to find spooky things just for the hell of it. In fact, had she been given the option she wouldn't be a hunter. She would've been a normal girl who had gotten married and had kids, living out the rest of her life and dying of old age with her husband.

"I hope you don't do this often, it can be dangerous if you run into the wrong ....people." She said, when he gave his suggestions she smiled but the smile fell when he mentioned that his girlfriend used to work here. Used to? Had she gotten fired? She suddenly felt guilty being with him now.

He hadn't mentioned a break up. Tons of questions filled her head but she stopped overthinking shit as a sad look reached his eyes before he tried to cover it with a smile. "You have a girlfriend? I mean, not that it matters or anything. It's not like I was expecting anything, I guess I just assumed...." the rest of the sentence fell on deaf ears as she waited for his response.
