I been living here for 4 years now.
Its literally a welfare town. Meaning everyones work is aimed at the lowest denomiator so there is no quality in anything.
The town mayor and counsel are ancient fogeys who think everything is just fine the way it is, which was good in the time they got into office, the 1800's.
I started going to town hall meetings about three years ago once I was living here for a year. I began to speak out on many things that needed changes. I began doing door to door surveys and petitions to see what people were looking for in a town for improvements. I began making presentations at these town hall meetings presenting all the findings and signatures to show that it just wasn't a fly of the handle spur of the moment idea.
Finally after four years things are really starting to take shape, shome of the old fogeys in office are waking up to what the people want and need.
Some victories that the towns people are now seeing are:
-A down town coffee and donut shop, Tim Horton's {This being the second the town has one but its near the highway exit. finally one down town.}
-Banking with extended hours till 7pm for those people who work and don't have time to do the banking during the 9am-3pm regular hours
-A leash law to keep dogs in their own yards and not running free through the streets.
-->A bonus was also a pooper scooper law which has been a great thing I can finally walk on the lawn barefooted.
--->An a local encouragement to spay an neuter pets to prevent strays, a huge town problem.
Some in progress victories are:
-A Smitty's restaurant is being built. that doesn't seem like much until you realise the regular restaurants serve what I call welfare food. {i.e. - Chichken, fish and fries, all cooked in the same deepfryer. And everything is over cooked. Or this towns version of Buffets (50 item buffets - 43 of the itmes being salad dressing
)} Smitty's serves good food, it is a highly recognized franchise and they regular check thier franchise to insure quality food.
-An Office of Food and quality inspector {this is actually going to provincial office but they will be making regular surprise visits to Woodstock 'restaurants' which will likely lead to three local holes being shut down shortly, and that is a big woohoo.
- New local bylaws which will require employers are only allowed to hire 50% of thier staff at the minimum wage (6$/h){something every employer in this town from gas stations to law firms have been taking advantage of in this town} and a requirement for those hired above minimum wage that they are given more than 20 hours and benefits giving as full time workers {another thing this town is famous for, if you do get a better than minimum wage job they work you just under the legal limits to pay benefits}
Achieved victories yet to be enacted upon but will be shortly:
-A 800 seat ampatheter{sp?} style theather for drama, opera, plays, music, concerts etc. {this is a huge victory seeing as the nearest is a three hourdrive, this is huge no matter how much a lover of the arts that you are}(as a side victory the town will also be starting its own nontaxpayer supported theater group to be performing regularly 4 times a year) This is currently slated to
be finished and completed in the down town area in 2005.
-A three screen movie theatre, two 140 seat screens and a 200 seat screen. {Another huge victory for woodstock and its surrounding communities as the nearest to woodstock theater is an hour drive even with the divided 110km/h highway, even longer for the surrounding communities. This will be big because being so close to the American border which the nearest communites have the same travel problems there as well. This is curently scheduled to be statrted this month and be finished by/in January 2003.
-A new fast food chain A&W being opened as well to add a little varity to this towns two fast food chain competition. This is currently scheduled to be started and completed before Februrary 2003.
-A new department store to give competion tho this towns current one department store monopoly. Current schedule unknown.
Some other victories still in the work:
- A watchful eye on wasteful town spending {i.e.- no more painting the crosswalks, paving the repar work over top of the paint and repainting}.
-A Town welfare reform work program for those of able body. {street sweeping in the summer, man hole cover clearing, lampost cleaning amnd painting, planting programs, gerneal beautification, winter snow removal programs where plows dont get, etc 32 hours a week to get the welfare check, not more easy street watch Jerry Springer pick up the check routine, physically unable people won't have to work for there checks.}
-Limited office terms for town council see the present staff being there from the 1800's or earlier.
-a possible provincial office of landlord quality assurance {That is likely to run a few slum lords of of the province}
Over all things are staring to shape up in this town, I am not responsible for it but I was a dman sqeuaky wheel wanting some effective change going on and the fever caught on and people got excited. I am getting excited.
